Ignas Zalys was born in Lithuania on April 3, 1913. He later immigrated to Montreal, Canada. Zalys was one of the leading correspondence chess players in North America, and frequently played in USCF postal tournaments. He tied for first in the 1967 Golden Knights tournament.
