Ilya Leontievich (aka Elias) Rabinovich was born in 1891 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Joint USSR Champion in 1934 he also won the Leningrad Championship in 1920, 1925 (joint), 1928 and 1940-41. He was primarily a positional player. He perished in the siege of Leningrad in 1942.

Apr-20-06   dbquintillion: <offramp> good question. you'd think that a long, slow squeeze like the siege of leningrad would be precisely the sort of thing a positional player would be prepared for. perhaps the tactical players sacced some of their colleagues to maneuver their way out.
