Ion Balanel was born in Bucharest, Romania. Awarded the IM title in 1954 he was Romanian champion in 1950, 1953, 1955 and 1958. In 1958 he was virtually excommunicated from his club Dinamo and put in a lunatic asylum by the communist regime.
