JAIME EMMA
(born Jan-17-1938, died Jan-09-2005, 66 years old) Argentina

[what is this?]

International Master (1978). He played in the 1958, 1972, and 1978 Olympiads; finished third in the 1972 Argentinian Championship; and won the 1978 championship. He tied for first with Browne, Smyslov, and Panno at the Los Polvorines Open (1980), with Browne winning on tiebreak.

Emma was a lawyer by profession. He was an enthusiastic disseminator of the game in the media, publishing a weekly column in the magazine "Siete Días" for several years. He was later a regular contributor to the magazine "Humor."

In 1987 he moved to the province of San Luis to teach chess. His journalistic activity annoyed the local authorities, who harassed him, detained him without cause for 25 days in 1992, and in 1996 expelled him and his family from their home. The Argentine Gaming Federation ceded its Buenos Aires headquarters to Emma as partial payment of money owed to him.

Sneaky: Jaime was a "he", but anyhow, it says that because it's true. What's the problem?

Fusilli: I was his student for a year or two in the 80s. He was a lawyer and political journalist/columnist, and got himself involved in politics although he never held public office (he ran for Congressman once, but it was largely symbolic as he had no chance.) He was even arrested for a brief period by the government of the province of San Luis (same San Luis as the 2005 FIDE World Championship) as a retaliation for openly criticizing their corrupt governor. He was released quickly afterward as a consequence of the bad press that the move generated (arresting a political columnist... what a dumb move!) He smoke A LOT. I don't know what he died of, but wouldn't be surprised if it was lung cancer.
