Filipino chess player Jesse Noel Sales is set to try to bounce back in contention in the on-going 2009 Australian Open Chess Championships at the Manly-Warringah Rugby Leagues Club in Sydney, Australia after suffering a loss to Aussie International Master Aleksander Wohl.

Sales, who was leading in the first five rounds before losing to Wohl, is set to face fellow FIDE Master Vladimir Smirnov in the seventh round.

With the setback, Sales stopped at 5 points to share second to fifth places with Smirnov, Tomek Rej and Eugene Schon.

Wohl now enjoys the solo lead with 5.5 points after sixth games of play.

In Davao, Gerald Cavan emerged as over-all champion of the recently concluded 2008 Pahalipay Chess Tournament at the Gaisano South Citimall.

Cavan, who drew with veteran chess player Reynaldo Quinonez in the seventh and final round, scored a total of 6.5 points.

The Pahalipay Chess Tournament was organized by James Infiesto, the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Region XI coordinator, with the assistance of National Master Prospero Cruz.
