JESSIE GILBERT
(born Jan-30-1987, died Jul-26-2006) United Kingdom

[what is this?]
Jessie Gilbert, of Croydon, England, learned to play chess when she was eight. In 1999, at the age of 11, she won the Women's World Amateur Championship, the youngest player to ever have done so. In the process, she acquired the Women’s World Chess Federation Master title, another record for her age. To recognise this achievement, the Brain Trust charity, in concert with the Swedish health and education giant Bure, awarded Jessie a £4,000 chess scholarship and a trip to America, where she studied with Edmar J Mednis.

Since she was 12, Jessie had represented England every year at World or European Girls' Championships. In 2001 she won the bronze medal in the European Girls' Under 14 Championship.

In 2006, her life was tragically cut short when she fell from an eighth floor hotel window, while competing at the Czech Open in Pardubice.

  twinlark: <GufeldStudent>

May you find it in your heart to forgive your sister.

May her soul rest in peace.

May you heal from your soul searing experience.

Nov-25-06   blingice: I gotta admit, <Knight13>'s post is the first case of thread-disregarding so egregious that has actually made me want to throw up.

Open Defence: My name was <Jessie> I <lived on the eigth> floor I <lived> upstairs from you Yes I think you've seen me before
If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud
They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again
Well, if you ask that's what I'll say
And it's not your business anyway
I guess I'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown
Just don't ask me how I am
Just don't ask me how I am

-Adapted from <Luka> by <Suzanne Vega>

R.I.P. Jessie...

Nov-25-06   Nibiru: Open Defense, 'I lived on the eight floor', I don't think that's appropriate at all.

Open Defence: <nibiru> typo... was typing fast...
Nov-25-06   Nibiru: didn't notice that, English is not my native language. Somehow I feel it's a bit rude to say she lived on the eight(blimey, how do you spell that?) floor. That's just what I feel about it. No big deal, RIP Jessie

Open Defence: < Nibiru > the words were adapted from a song and the intention was a tribute in memoriam to the tragedy..... and not to be rude...

Knight13: <Karpova> Yeah, sorry, I was too lazy to kill my time reading 9 pages.
Nov-25-06   babakova: <My bias is anti-crap.> I liked this one.
Dec-01-06   Rocafella: <Nibiru> I'm sorry but I think that poem was really cool. Don't start a do-gooder rant, <OD> was trying to do something nice.
Dec-06-06   neophyte87: I found this website while looking at a side of Jessie that I,for one, never 'fully' realised

I certainly can't stop people giving their opinions, and the sympathy expressed by most of this group has been touching.

However, perhaps a few people could do with thinking twice before they say and post certain things?I shouldnt have carried on reading but as a friend of Jessie's I've found the past 10 pages very upsetting to read in places.

Dec-06-06   Stevens: <neophyte87> condolences to you. i think this page should be cleaned up. idle speculation and rehashing the news everytime it's released isn't really necessary in my opinion. not here anyway.

i don't think many of the posts here are intended as offensive, but certainly some have been misguided.

Dec-11-06   Chess Classics: <I don't extend dripping amounts of sympathy to people I don't know, because sympathy-giving requires knowing background.> So in other words, you have absolutely no sympathy for anyone unless you know them very well? I fail to see the knowledge in that. And did he ask for a dripping amount of sympathy?

<My bias is anti-crap.> This assumes that you know what crap is and that everyone else here does not. Get real, one person's crap is another person's gold, and it's all a matter of opinion. To say that you are anti-crap is to insinuate that your opinion is better than everyone elses.

And just because the admins don't hack down everything they don't like doesn't mean that they are spineless. It means that they think things through, which you appear to have failed to do.

No, blingice, you're a good guy, but you simply are not in the right here.

Regards,
CC

Oh, @#$% off.

Gypsy: So this guy claims that his daughter was an evil genius, scheming and kniving, even taking her own life to get even with him for some minor spite? And the court bought that crap? For goodness sake: Had she been an evil genius, then she certainly botched the job!

Mr. Gilbert, I believe that Hell awaits you. Enjoy your temporary reprieve.

Dec-14-06   diemjay: I hope that all parties involved in this tragedy (Jessie, her father etc...) find peace. I don't really think I am in a position to accurately comment on what did or did not happen. However, I will say that I believe it will all come out in the wash.

AdrianP: I'd be quite happy to find Mr Gilbert guilty on the balance of probabilities but beyond reasonable doubt...? Without being able to test the testimony against him by cross-examination? Surely the verdict is utterly unsurprising.

And, if I may add, Mr Ian Gilbert, you can escape punishment here on Earth, but the eternal damnation awaits you. You have the option to pay here on earth to mitigate your eternal damnation. You are not young anymore, how many years do you think you here on earth. The grim ripper will get you!

Dec-15-06   petrovalovski: Once he is dead it will no longer matter what he did in his life, the same goes for all of us. Including those who believe the Jesus and God tale.
Dec-15-06   Amulet: ......have you seen the film `Ghost' Mr. Gilbert? That's Exactly what's going to happen to you. And by the way do not close your eyes, they may not open again. You will not have peace Mr Gilbert, until you admit your crime against your daughter. Tell the court that you are guilty, then you will have a little peace in your heart.

CoryLetain: Using his daughters talent as a defence for himself seems fairly thin.
Dec-15-06   TIMER: I don't know the circumstances, and this is all very sensitive stuff, but the argument about her being scheming by her chess does not make sense to me. You don't sacrifice your king in chess. I think he uses her chess too much in his argument.

A laptop dispute is disproportianately small compared to the overall scheme of what happened, so does not really make sense to me- must be more to it than that.

Also it seemed a bit cold (maybe that is just how it was reported?) the way he did not say anything about his grief and just put her down to protect himself.

chancho: Wow, the mother of Jessie was arrested for threatening to kill her ex husband.
