Resignation Trap: This young player (born April 24, 1977) is a FIDE master with a current rating of 2391.

Due to the similarity of his name and Xie Jun , chessgames.com has given him credit for games which were actually played by Xie Jun. Of the 46 games given here, only those dated 1996 or later were played by Jianjun Xie, the earlier ones by Xie Jun.

More caution is to be exercised in the future, for there are two more very talented young players from Australia: Ken Xie, and George Xie .

Apr-24-05   WorldChampeen: Who is very interesting; is one of the early Xies:

"Alekhine was the first great chess player to visit China in 1933. In an exhibition played in Shanghai, he was held to two draws, one to Xie Xiashun, nick-named "Centurian chess king" because at 100 years old, he was a strong player in all the three forms of chess. Xie, not related to former women's world champion Xie Jun, helped to promote the game and was the top player in China after the 2nd World War. In 1935, he visited Malaya and Singapore and defeated their champion as well as the British Air Forces champion Hunter. In 1936, in Guangzhou, the British sponsored a tournament with top players from Austria, Britain, China, Germany and the United States. Xie won the tournament convincingly by drawing one and winning the other 18 games.

In 1987, Xie (who lived in Wenzhou) died at the age of 101." - http://www.ishipress.com/chinasto.htm

This could be possibly the same first name, "Jianjun" vs. "Xiashun" and is just a matter of translation. Of course, not the same player.

Aug-30-09   lentil: Chessgames may have ongoing problems with distinguishing Chinese players. The problems are that (1) (except for some minority groups) all Chinese surnames are one syllable long, (2) many names (words) that have different meanings and intonations in Chinese are transliterated into the same letters in English; (3) the number of names is limited ; and (4) the population of China is > 1.3 billion.

Some dedicated system may be needed for Chinese names.
