Joshka: ChessLife has an article in this months mag on this tournament in Austria last September. But it was kind of "bait and switch"....leads off with an old pic of Jude from 1972, and the article, starts off with 'Hey Jude"....mentions that Jude finished with the highest score of all Americans participating....but then....there is not an INTERVIEW with him!!!...not even ONE GAME was given!!....They had an opportunity to finally have a lengthy informative interview with Jude, and they blew it!!!....shame on the USCF.....nice long interview with America's newest GM..."Fabulous Fabiano".....by Macauley Peterson, but Dr. Carl Wagner, I'd never buy a used car from you!;-)....also the cheap looking characterizations of the U.S. Correspondence Olympic Team on the cover is terrible. Then to add insult to injury, they have these same dreadful pictures all the way thru the inside article!!......
Jan-06-08   DrGrobb: Joshka,do you live around Hwy 61,you look like a guy that played chess in MS years ago. I was looking forward to the Seniors championship article, and seeing what Jude played.
Jan-11-08   arthurp: I read reports that Jude did well at the senior championships but even though he scored higher than all the US entrants, none of his games exist!Did he really play chess in the 80's &90's etc.?No games!Instead we are given games from the 60's & 70's!!! I like Jude as much as the next person but lets see some current games please!
Jan-11-08   DrGrobb: Jude,is a pro and he makes a small living playing chess everyday,7 days a week. I would like to see his current games too,but on the senior site, they for whatever reason didnt post his games. Maybe he asked them not to,so a person couldnt book up on him.

  whiteshark: Quote of the Day

< Chess is first and foremost a sport, fought ferociously at any level between quite interested parties. Once they are interested it's all out war. >

-- Jude Acers

If you leave off the prelude than chess is war, a struggle of minds.

Aug-31-08   DrGrobb: Hope you are out ,JUDE!!!!
Mar-22-09   acerfan: Any news on Jude,he is now a FIDE MASTER
Apr-06-09   acerfan: Happy Birthday Jude!!!

Joshka: Any news on "The Road"? Acers was supposed to be working on this new book last year. Thanks in advance!!

Some call me Tim: Jude had some great moments in Fischer's 1964 simul tour, recounted in John Donaldson's "A Legend on the Road." At the time Acers was a student at LSU and reportedly he and Bobby had two individual blitz games that Fischer won, outside the simuls. Acers's rendition of a whirlwind trip in San Francisco with Bill Addison is a classic device to channel Addison's commentary about Fischer's 11-0 blitz in the 1963-64 US Championship, in which of course Addison played.

Joshka: Yea, that's a valuable account by Donaldson, indeed. It's one of those books, one can pick up and read anywhere, over and over. From what I have been able to find, Jude's new book will cover HIS experiences during his travels all over the country doing simuls, lecture's, ect. I would think, the colorful Acers and his traveling caravan for chess, would be a great subject for a movie. Listening to Jeremy Silman talk about chess lore, and player's personalities, an Acer's film would be a natural fit, IMHO. But then again, the Fischer story cannot yet be told for some reason. "Bobby Fischer Goes to War" gets nixed. Chapa's, "Bobby Fischer Live" is still unreleased, HBO was suppose to do a special on Fischer, so far nothing.

HeMateMe: An interesting rarity available from Acers, Lone Pine 1975: Heres a nice description:

Lone Pine 1975 was the first ever truly Grandmaster Swiss event ever held in the world. Twenty-two grandmasters from Europe, Asia and South America all converged on Lone Pine, California. No event like that had ever previously been held, especially since there were only 90 grandmasters in the world then and 39 of them were locked in the Soviet Union and could not easily get out. Here are all 220 games of this historic event, in both descriptive and algebraic notations. Many of the games are annotated by the players themselves. Included here are notes and game analysis by Larry Evans, Pal Benko, Samuel Reshevsky, Svetozar Gligoric, Ala Kushnir, David Levy, Florin Gheorghiu, Leonid Shamkovich, Istvan Bilek, Jude Acers, Alan Benson and many other famous players. Plus there are 43 photos from this historic event.

About the Author
Robert E. Burger is a California chess master best known for defeating Bobby Fischer in a simultaneous chess game.

ONLY 90 GMs in 1975? I guess breaking 2700 was quite a feat back then. I bet there were a lot more than 90 GMs behind the Iron Curtain, they were just not known in the West.

Does anyone know if Jude Acers still plays sidewalk chess, or was his part of New Orleans permanently damaged?

whiskeyrebel: HeMateMe, I never managed to see exactly where he was stationed during my trips to New Orleans. I remember hearing he spent the storm and the aftermath in a bar in the French quarter, which was relatively undamaged.

HeMateMe: For years he had a running ad in Chess Life that "Jude Acers takes on all comers at Cafe________". Was he still there, until the disaster struck?

parisattack: An interesting chess-fellow. I met him in the early 70s - he crashed at a friend of mine while playing in a local tournament. Very, very sharp tactically. I found him some full-of-himself but I suspect the years will have taken the edge of that aspect.

A 4-hour chess lesson from him would undoubtedly be a good buy if one could afford the $400.

HeMateMe: Why is he so special? I could see Lev Alburt or Pandolfini getting that money, but isn't he just a strong club player?

I would like to see that book he wrote about Lone Pine 1975, but I can't spend that kind of money on chess books. When they digitize everything, a lot of pricey stuff will be gettable.
