midknightblue: <millert> To clarify my game against Jude in the Quarter... in all fairness to him: there was no clock and I was taking more time to move than him. 2) he was playing one other person during the beginning of the game, a weak player whom he dispatched twice in rapid fashion. After our game, he was angry and upset. He demanded I play him for free in a blitz game and I declined. I knew that whether his strength was as high as he claimed or even if he was just a master (no criticism intended to masters, I wish I was one myself), that I would certainly get thoroughly whooped in a blitz game. My blitz play is awful. In retrospect, had he been a good sport and taken the loss with grace, I would have gladly let him save face by showing his blitz skills in what would have undoubtedly been a swift win for him.
Sep-23-05   Edwin Meyer: Why are there only so little games from Jude?

whiskeyrebel: I live a days drive away from New Orleans. One of these days I'm gonna make my Jude pilgrimage and get whupped in a couple blitz games. Maybe I'll fortify myself with a couple of those big and deadly "hand grenade" booze drinks first..so I won't be shy about expressing my admiration for him.

Joshka: Thanks redlance for the good news! Whiskeyrebel I have great admiration for him as well, this guy's life could most certainly be made into a chess movie that would appeal to the masses. I know they don't look alike, but someone needs to put a script together for Al Pacino to play Jude's life story! We need some top billing actor, Pacino is an avid chess player. Next to a Fischer movie, Jude's gypsy chess playing career, could be marketable I believe.

whiskeyrebel: yeah Joshka, I've had a couple books published myself..I can see right off there's a lot of material for somebody to work with. His bohemian/chess lifestyle (from what I gather) in the 60's-70's..the many simuls in every corner of the country, his interaction with prison inmates, being (like all other strong players from the U.S.) in the shadow of Fischer, New Orleans street chess, Morphy's shadow, the hurricane threatening his way of life...his sort of triumphant return to the city. In the 20th century, how many U.S. chess players sat across the board from more players? Plus, he did it with STYLE.

Joshka: <whiskeyrebel> Well there you go!!, you have made the points exactly about his life, that I believe would make an extraordinary Bio on his life and travels thru the chess wars! As a writer yourself, you ever do bio's?? thanks for commenting!:-)
Apr-09-06   redlance: Joshka, somebody I think would play that part perfect would be Robin Williams, they even look alike!! His life would make a great movie,
good idea!!!

Joshka: <redlance> Wow you're right! Williams DOES resemble the "Man With the Red Beret'!:-) Excellent suggestion indeed:-)
Aug-14-06   PizzatheHut: Some of you might have seen my post on the Morphy page, but this past weekend I was in New Orleans visiting my girlfriend. We walked through the French Quarter and stumbled across the table of Jude Acers. I've known that he resides in the French Quarter, but I didn't think about it at all until we ran by him. He charges $5 per game and $400 for a four hour lesson. I decided to pay the $5 despite knowing I would lose with 100% certainty.

Jude is an interesting character. He's fun to talk to and has a certain charm about him. He clearly loves the city and will talk your ear off. My girlfriend actually got a kick out of watching the game and talking with Jude. He actually pointed us to the famous Cafe Du Monde, which he said was visited by Steinitz, Zukertort, Capablanca, Marshall, and others. Playing with him was quite a treat!

As far as the game was concerned, he opened much less sharply than I expected. The opening was (I played black) 1. d4 d5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Bg5 e6 4. e4 dxe4 5. Nxe4 Be7 6. Bxf6 Bxf6 and then I can't remember anymore. We played for a while, and one time he even exclaimed "He's making me think. It's nice to have a challenge for a change". Eventually he did win with a nice tactical trick I overlooked that lost a knight. All in all, it was extremely fun and was well worth the $5 just for the experience.

Here are a few pictures of Jude and me. In the final pic, you'll see him holding up the knight that I lost. Enjoy.

jackpawn: <PizzatheHut> Thanks for the photos and rundown of Jude. It's good to know he's apparently alright. I played him back in the 70's. What a character!

Joshka: <Pizzathehut> Wow, thanks for posting and sharing the photos!..VERY happy to hear he's allright, and back doing what he loves!:-) Check out his book "The Italian Gambit" lotta great lines in there that are very playable!!
Aug-14-06   letekro: Does Jude play with an invisible chess clock or does he not use one? I'd find either one equally surprising.
Aug-14-06   PizzatheHut: <letekro> We didn't play with a clock at all. He actually said I was free to take as long as I wanted to. He played instantly every move except for one in which he thought about 3-4 minutes. Other than that the game was over pretty quick.
Aug-14-06   letekro: <PizzatheHut> That's really cool. I'm not aware of any other "Cafe Master" who would do that.

Joshka: <pizzathehut> Hi there, are you "Pizzahut" on the ICC??..we have a stored game to continue!!..thanks bruce
Aug-19-06   PhilFeeley: <PizzatheHut>For your game, I've always been told never to bring out the b1 knight in double queen's pawn openings until the c4 pawn is advanced. In your game, according to the Chessgames database, the opening is either the Richter-Veresov Attack (D01), a Queen's Pawn Game (D00) or a transposition to the French or Caro-Kahn. An interesting game.

Joshka: Just read on Jude's web site, that he will be playing in the Senior Championship next month. Korchnoi won last's years tourney. Kasparov will also be there, doing a simul and lecture, I believe. Still think Robin Williams could do an extraordinary performance, in Jude's role if someone could ever get Jude's life story to the silver screen!!!
