Keith MacKinnon was born in Saskatoon, Canada. At the age of 15, he achieved a Canadian National Master certification. He placed clear first at the Saskatchewan Open in 2009 and tied 1st-2nd with Jamin Gluckie the previous year. During his adolescent years, he was consistently ranked in the top five players for his age in the country. In 2013, he scored 3.5/5 to win silver on 3rd board for the McGill team A at the Canadian Universities' Interleague Chess Championship.
