WGM Ketino Kachiani-Gersinska was born in Mestia, Georgia. At the age of 5 she learned the rules of chess from her father. She studied journalism in Tiflis and moved to Germany in 1993 where she married Jürgen Gersinska and gave birth to two children (David, born 1995 and Michael, born 2003). In 1994 she acquired German citizenship and went on to become one of the strongest female chessplayers of her country.

In 1986 she won the U16 USSR Girls' Championship and came in second in the U16 World Girls' Championship the same year. She became Georgian Women's Champion in 1987 and won the U20 World Girls' Championship two consecutive years in 1989 and 1990. Ketino Kachiani-Gersinska became a WGM in 1990 and an IM in 1997.
