Resignation Trap: This player has four identities on our www.chessgames.com website. In addition to this page, he also has Binet , Laszlo T Binet and L Binet .

He was born in Oroshaza Hungary in 1930. He was a participant in the Hungarian Championship tournaments of 1954 (+4=2-12) and 1955 (+3=7-8).

He moved to Venezuela and was the Venezuelan national champion in 1964, 1966, 1971, 1983, 1990 and 1995. He played for the Venezuelan team in the Olympiads of 1964, 1988, and 1990.

He is still active in chess and frequently plays in tournaments in and around Rochester, New York. Current rating: 2316. See: http://main.uschess.org/assets/msa_... .

"Tapaszto" is his family name, but when he came to Venezuela, in true Spanish-style, his name appeared as "Laszlo Tapaszto Binet", leading many to write his name as simply "Binet". To further complicate matters, in Hungary, it is standard practice to put family surnames first when appearing in print, i.e. <Portisch Lajos>.

Dec-18-08   jrofrano: I had the pleasure of meeting laszlo last night at the RCC and he is a very entertaining man. He did an impression of walter browne at the board being jittery. And when i asked him if walter would get into time trouble he said, "get into?! He lived in time trouble!" He also is one of the few people who can say that he has a perfect score against fischer 1-0-0 100%.
