Sneaky: When I saw the Player of the Day, I took a trip down memory lane.

You see, when I was a young man fresh out of high school, I had a summer job acquired through an employment agency called "Temp One".

Sep-06-08   JuliusCaesar: It's a trip down memory lane for me too-:). Tempone-Kasparov was the second game of chess I ever went through (from a newspaper column about a promising young Soviet player!). He turned out to be very promising indeed...the Soviet player that is.
Sep-06-08   Eastfrisian: In his youth, he was a very talented player, but since then he did not have very good results, as I know.

Sep-06-08   DarthStapler: <JuliusCaesar> You mean this game? M J Tempone vs Kasparov, 1980
Jan-29-09   laskereshevsky: <DarthStapler:> your reffered game was played in the seventh round of the under 20 world championship helded in Dortmund August 1980... 58 young players from 55 country joined it.

After four round -- Garry Kasparov (USSR), D. Arnason (ICELAND), R. Achesson (SWEDEN) and A. Neglescu (ROMANIA) were leading with 3.5 points...

Then Garry beat D. Arnason and, in the sixth round, R. Achesson, becoming the leader with a whole point advantage...

in the seventh round the victory over Tempone gived to him a 1.5 points advantage over the second.

Kasparov wrote comments over this game, almost six pages (!). Garry gived a clear advantage to his opponent after 21 moves...

<...21. Kh1... The Black have the pieces awkwardly positioned, and a clear weakness in the center...> After <25. Rcd1?!...suddendly he> (Tempone) <offered draw!...with this move the white lost almost all the advantage, but not so much as to give me real chances. In spite of this i decided to got the risk and try to play for win....>

After this victory with 6.5 on 7 the problem to find the winner was resolved...

Final rank:
1. Kasparov 10.5,
2. Short 9,
3-5. Morovic, Neglescu, Bischoff 8.5,
6-14. Achesson, Tempone, Danailov (the Topalov's and Ponomariov's manager!..), Karoly, Hjorth, Zuger, Hansen, Arnason, Barua 8,
15-16. Gerbert, Valkesalmi 7.5, etc...
