keypusher: <Jim Bartle: Anyone who thinks Stephen King is the greatest nine authors in the USA is too (something) for most women.>

Since Bachman is a pen name, King actually occupies the top ten spaces on his top ten list...

benjinathan: <NakoSonorense> I don't think I understand being young anymore, but I think it is OK to be a geek as long as you don't look like one.
Oct-19-07   Jim Bartle: No, no, no. It's OK to look like a geek as long as you aren't one.
Oct-19-07   dakgootje: geekiness is probably both determined both by appearance as behavious with the interesting sidenote that you are proclaimed geek if you show the prejudiced looks OR behaviour, you don't even need both!

Nice! Though not very gallant to Miss Menchik. Or Queen Isabella, I suppose.

Shams: Ask Rosalind Franklin how generous Watson and Crick were to women.

keypusher: Franklin was not so generous herself. She was dead by the time the Nobel was awarded anyway.

Shams: it's true that the Nobel is never given posthumously, but I'm not aware of how she was ungenerous. it does seem clear that she was uncredited for some pretty critical work though. am I wrong?

keypusher: <shams> It depends on what you read, and I won't pretend to know where the truth lies. Probably no one does. Supposedly she wouldn't share her data, not because she was developing the DNA theory on her own, but because she was paranoid or secretive. Wilkins went behind her back to get some of her critical work to Crick and Watson.

But of course she wasn't around to defend herself when Watson described her as paranoid and secretive in his 1968 book. On the other hand, her unavailability probably made it easier to canonize her as a feminist martyr in the 1970s and after.

Karpova: Franklin is credited together with Watson and Crick nowadays (sure, she should be). She never got the Nobel prize but it's known what she did and how important it was and it won't be forgotten.

Not that it had anything to do with Melanie Ohme.

So back to her:
The simul <whiteshark> gave the picture to was her first and a real success: She played on 20 boards and won all games except for 1 draw.

technical draw: Well. I didn't know my Publishing company would start a debate on Nobel Prize winners and female scientists and spying and paranoia and uncredited scientific work. Now that's OK but buying my book is better. TD, famous author......
