WannaBe: Did Michael Rohde boat ashore?
Jan-31-06   WTHarvey: I have the scoresheet for a 3 move win against Michael. He was playing in the Open section in a Washington DC tournament Dec 1990. When it looked like he wouldn't be picking up as many Grand Prix points for the open section as he had anticipated, he entered the G/30 section. He would make a move in one section and then go back over to the other. :-) Things got out of hand pretty, well, rapidly. He then devoted himself to the open section and never came back to pick up his scoresheet. He had only completed the first three moves when his clock ran out.

Here are some winning combinations from his games: http://www.wtharvey.com/rohd.html

Chess Classics: <WTHarvey> That must have been the game of the month in his column for Chess Life that month :-)

midknightblue: I love his book on the evan's gambit.
Mar-24-06   azaris: Who is Evan?

keypusher: You mean you don't know <the> Evan? Or his gambit?
Mar-24-06   azaris: No, I presume he's some guy who also isn't familiar with the correct use of apostrophes.

keypusher: Yes, it was my own ignorance of apostrophes that kept me from playing the delightful <Gambit of Captain Evans> for so long -- could not fit the name of the opening into the space on the scoresheet. Then I learned you could, if you wished, write it without apostrophes altogether: <The Evans Gambit>, in the style of <The Maltese Falcon> or <The Bronze Age> . Now it's just <the Stone-Ware Defense> and its affiliated hyphens that keep me up at night.

I recommend the variation known as <Tupper-Ware Defense>.

WannaBe: Since I'm on a roll here... More potential pun, "Rohde Scholar"
Mar-27-06   Jim Bartle: Wannabe: A good comedian knows an exit line, and you will never top 'Michael Rohde boat ashore."

By the way, back in the day I was a Rohde for the Allman Brothers.
