Nigel Kalton was born on June 20th, 1946. In 1964, he was a member of the Dulwich College Chess Club which came second in the Sunday Times competition. In 1966 he tied for 6th place in the Eastbourne Open. In 1967 and 1968 he represented Cambridge vs. Oxford, scoring 1.5/2. In Warwick, 1970, he placed 1st in the Major Open with 8.5/11. Nigel retired from over-the board play 1976, but found time to play in the IECG 1993-96.

He is a distinguished mathematician and currently teaches at the University of Missouri.
