Well that's true, if they're betting on the match result, rather than who will be champion. |

| MaxxLange: Sorry for my US politics derail, the other day, everyone. As <Ezzy> reminds us, we have a good place already for that kind of discussion, and it ain't here |

| JamTin: Nigel, I have just read the very in-depth interview with you in Chess magazine, November issue (which from the text I think was conducted whilst the Staunton tournament was underway - and having attended one day to spectate, I fully agree with your comments on the conditions). I'd definitely buy the book you talk about possibly writing, an anthology of autobiographical episodes, rather than a full autobiography. It makes sense to me as a reader to concentrate on the things you think are interesting, and if it means we get a higher % of the real inimitable Nigel Short writing as opposed to ghostwriting, so much the better. [others please note, mention of ghostwriting isn't an attack on Nigel's integrity, he discusses the possibility of using one in the interview] |

| HeMateMe: I like Nigel's commenting on the Kasparov simul at Antwerp. Its a video file, they do a nice job of taking you into a simul. I with they had filmed on the three Polgar's doing a simul in (Las Vegas?) The Melody Amber would also be a good place for video + commentating, looking at what is going wrong in the blindfold positons. Curiously, Kasparov never played Melody Amber. Blindfold chess freaked him out. |

What did Nigel say about the conditions? I think I sat next to him in the bar area as he was being interviewed. Sadly Chess has not been sold in the shops for years, so i never see it any more. |

| Nigel Short: <kellmano> I was very happy to play at the Staunton Memorial. Nevertheless the conditions for the spectators were less than ideal. If one does not wish to use electronic boards one should at least have demo-boards which are visible to the average person and operators who both know how to play chess and can refrain from scratching their testicles in public. Sadly this was not the case this year. Representations have been made and I am certain that there will be improvements next year. |

| Ezzy: <Nigel Short: ....operators who both know how to play chess and can refrain from scratching their testicles in public> Lol. 1 do think you should be focusing more on your chessgame Nigel. Hope you enjoyed your trip to Argentina. A slightly below par result for David, but a wealth of experience gained. Hopefully now you can return back home to your family, get some pizza + chips, sit in front of the computer, and all watch the TAL MEMORIAL!! :-) Go on Nigel, 'stick your neck out' give us a prediction of your winner for the tournament. I'm going for Kramnik. I still think he's got a lot of aces up his sleeve. |

I was sat in the bar area with a friend when Howell played some amazing move against Soko and got to see your ecstatic reaction. Great to be able to mingle with the players as a fan. Admittedly, a bottle of London Pride cost more than a fiver, but you can't have it all. |

| ray keene: re the staunton memorial-i am afraid there may not be a next year as the sponsor has announced his withdrawal after four years of excellent tournaments. |
 |
| Nov-04-09 |
| JamTin: That's a shame Ray.
<kellmano> Though Chess isn't generally distributed any more you can still get it on subscription or if you're in London from the Chess & Bridge centre on Euston Road. Nigel's comments on the Staunton conditions were along the lines he has already expressed here. Lack of screens in the playing hall, lack of signposting of the event within the venue, lack of commentary room. I'd also add the playing hall was very cramped for spectactors, though as you say the bar area was good. |

 |
| Nigel Short: I am very sorry to hear that, Ray. It was a very important event on the English chess calendar and good fun to participate in. As you well know, my comments about the demo-boards were a quibble. |

| ray keene: hi nigel-dont worry-he had withdrawn before you said anything about the demo boards-timman has assured me that the dutch players will try to persuade him to change his mind but so far good news is notable by its absence |
