Oct-12-06   waddayaplay: He was known as Folke Ekström.

Died 2000-01-28 in Saltsjöbaden, 93 years old. Obituary notice http://www.abc.se/~m225/litteratur/...

An obituary was written in Tidskrift för Schack, 2/2000 by Lars Grahn.

Dec-16-06   Lovisa: I'm Folke's granddaughter. It's fun to see that my granddad's remembered! I was in Cuba some years ago and came across a chess tournament in Cienfuegos. I mentioned Folke's name and they remembered him too!

I don't know too much about Folke's chess games but would like to know more. If you know something about him, post a comment!

Benzol: <Lovisa> Welcome to the site. Perhaps your Dad can fill out a few more details about your Grandfather for you. Drawing with Paul Keres and beating Laszlo Szabo shows that he was quite a strong player.

Sneaky: Lovisa, your granddad beat Eugene Znosko-Borovsky, Arnold Denker, Laszlo Szabo, and Lodewijk Prins, all heavyweight chess masters of that era. From that alone, I can tell you that he was not to be taken lightly over the chessboard.

Ziggurat: Here's something that may be of interest:

http://lass.no-ip.com/LASS/LM7/Folk...

It's written in Swedish. Among other things, it says that Ekström, much to the chagrin of the Swedish chess association, chose to pursue a civil career instead of becoming a chess professional. Also, the Hastings tournament where he ended second and beat Euwe was his first international tournament!

Dec-16-06   Chessdreamer: Lovisa, your granddad participated in the 7th correspondence chess worldchampionshiptournament (1972-76)! This event was won by Y.Estrin (SU) with 12 points, followed by J.Boey (B) 11½, V.Zagorovsky (SU) and K.Richardson (GB) 11, J. Krzyszton (PL) and M.Yudovich (SU) 9½, F.Brglez (YU) and F.Ekstroem (S) 9, A.Sundin (S), E.Thiele (DDR) and P.Dubinin (SU) 8½, H.Cording (D) 7½, M.Zagorovsky (SU) 7, J.Zapletal (CS) 5, S.Letic (Y) 4½, J.Nielsen (DK) 3 and Z.Necesany (CS) 1.

Not really. <waddayaplay> posted the information last year. Look down about 10 posts on this page.

Oct-14-07   Eastfrisian: Oops, you are right. I should read all, before I post.

  Gypsy: Folke Ekstrom (*1906 +2000)

Ziggurat: <Gypsy> That is surprising. He must be one of the least well-known Chessmetrics top tens (and 2700+s!). According to Chessmetrics he was clearly better at his peak than Erik Lundin, who is a much more well-known Swedish player.
Dec-13-07   nescio: <Ziggurat> While I don't deny that he was apparently a very strong player, the successes of Ekström cannot really be compared to the achievements of his contempories Stoltz, Lundin, and Stahlberg. They were around for decades, while Ekström played only a few international tournaments. His rating of 1946/47 is probably based on the tournaments in Hastings '45/46 and Zaandam '46. He scored an amazing 17,5 out of 22, but I don't think 22 games is sufficient for a reliable rating.

Ziggurat: <nescio> Yes, I agree. Didn't realize the sample was so small.
