NN

[what is this?]
The abbreviation "NN" is used to signify an unknown player, usually an amateur. Although NN is sometimes believed to stand for "no name", that is incorrect: it is in fact an abbreviation of the Latin nomen nescio which means 'I don't know the name.'

Chessgames.com uses "NN" to fill in spots in the database where a player's identity is completely unknown, and also for games played on internet chess servers, wherein a player remains anonymous by playing behind a screen-name.

Dec-13-08   WhiteRook48: Who claims to be NN? Well, there's N N, TheGreatNN, NNTheGreat, and probably Nomen Nescio too.
Dec-15-08   vikinx: In my opinion, NN is not a real person. NN is a group of a bunch of amateurs that team up together, sort of like the Chessgames Challenge.

Or is it?...

Dec-22-08   zzzzzzzzzzzz: NN defeated a lot of strong players
Dec-22-08   WhiteRook48: NN defeated Lasker in a game. Also Alekhine, Capablanca, and those guys. Should we have an NN variation in the King's Gambit accepted? (NN's favorite opening) 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. ? Any idea of an NN variation? Can't be 3. Bc4 or 3. Nf3, since those are taken. How about: NN variation.
3. h4!!!! Wins in 89 moves. I'm too tired to post the forced checkmate.
Dec-22-08   WhiteRook48: NN likes ZZ classical music and YY swimming.
Dec-22-08   WhiteRook48: and NN never beat Capablanca
Dec-24-08   WhiteRook48: don't take my first dec-22 post seriously, ok?
The classical NN opening...
:-D hope you enjoy...
1. e3!? looks good to NN because the pawn's close to home. 1...e5?! seems a bit awkward, I would prefer d5.
2. Ke2? Voila! The retarded king opening.
(actually the real retarded king opening is 1. f3 e5 2. Kf2 d5) 2...d5 grabbing more central space.
3. Kd3!! the white K intends to go back to e2 and then e1 again, it would be funny if NN won with that sequence
Dec-24-08   WhiteRook48: NN loves the king's gambit accepted, but he almost always loses with it. Will he ever learn???
Dec-24-08   WhiteRook48: I have made a game collection on Remarkable NN wins. Actually the collection contains all of NN's wins. Not bad for one collection, is it?
Dec-24-08   WhiteRook48: He heh... I wish these guys who claim to be NN would return to the site. A lot of users have left the site lately, whether as NN or not.
Jan-20-09   WhiteRook48: NN, why haven't you been playing any 2009 games?
Feb-13-09   YoungEd: I curse my parents for having given me a name! Oh, but to be NN!

whiteshark: Is it <mysterious initials>, because they keep popping up again & again here on chessgames.com?
Mar-16-09   WhiteRook48: does NN stand for Nicholas Nip? Probably not.

whiteshark: omg, NN is now on the drop-down menue!
Mar-26-09   spudweb: This guy has a terrible records against Greco. Always loses.

kellmano: There are two explanations of NN's chessplaying. Together they make up two of my favourite posts on cg.com (they're from Xeroxmachine)
Mar-26-09   Jim Bartle: I suspect NN is going to have his day in the sun next Wednesday as Player of the Day.
Apr-01-09   TheTamale: Not too far off, <JimBartle>. They chose the automated player Ajeeb instead.
Apr-01-09   Dredge Rivers: NN??? By the looks of his play, it's more like PU! :)
May-14-09   YoungEd: Judging from the picture, I think the reason this guy loses so often is that his ear is shaped like a question mark, the universal sign for bad moves. Not to mention that it's sort of facing the wrong way.
