[what is this?]
My analytical commentary over the past centuries is generally well respected - at least to compared to my practical results at the board - & have translated my criticisms into English & occasionally Spanish for your delight. I include a miscellany of sharp, humourous & other bold positions here: games annotated by NN. Upon having checked these a few of these lines together with my Allies, our correspondence has confirmed that much of our work will hold sound for some time to come - or at least until Allies or I return to the board...

The abbreviation "NN" is used to signify an unknown player, usually an amateur. Although NN is sometimes believed to stand for "no name", that is incorrect: it is in fact an abbreviation of the Latin nomen nescio which means 'I don't know the name.'

Chessgames.com uses "NN" to fill in spots in the database where a player's identity is completely unknown, and also for games played on internet chess servers, wherein a player remains anonymous by playing behind a screen-name.

Feb-21-05   aw1988: Has NN ever been player of the day?
Feb-22-05   Whitehat1963: Don't know. Maybe.

NakoSonorense: i agree with <Whitehat1963>. NN should be player of the day. I mean, he has victories over Alekhine, Blackburne, Philidor, Marshall, and some others. A "random" player would not be able to do that. :)
Mar-07-05   soberknight: I've made this joke before, but I'll say it again.

Who is NN?

Nobody Nose!

vonKrolock: Meet NN again over the board in Internet Game still going on, one of the funniest i ever played (i share the pleasure whith You Mitkibitzers)

White: ZK vs Black: NN

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6
3. Nc3 Nf6 4. d4 cxd4
5. Nxd4 g6 6. Bc4 Bg7
7. O-O Nc6 8. Nxc6 bxc6
9. e5 dxe5 10. Qxd8+ Kxd8
11. Bg5 e6 12. Ne4 Ke7
13. f4

He saved the 'f7' pawn, but now how to avoid the loss of a whole piece...

Sneaky: NN's been quiet this year. He must be taking a break!

ughaibu: Maybe he's in a Japanese detention centre.
Mar-18-05   pubs r us: With his long association with the game, it's surprising NN doesn't have any openings named after him.

ughaibu: Maybe we could find an NN variation in the KGA(?), it's his favourite opening.
Mar-18-05   darook: Question to the grand chess scholars: is there a chess opening or a variation named after NN, like say 'the Sicilian NN'?!

Sneaky: I've heard of several openings dubbed the "No Name Opening." One of them is 1.d4 Nc6, although Keene told me this might be referred to as Bogoljubov's Defense.

karnak64: Richard Wincor, I believe it was, wrote a book back in the 70's entitled "Baroque Chess Openings" in which he dubbed 1 d3 the "no name opening" and a weird Black defense involving d6, c6, Nf6, and Qa5 the "no name defense."
Mar-19-05   darook: Thanks guys :).
Mar-21-05   Mate Hunter: NN beat Gerardo F Barbero 9-8, with 10 draws!

Apr-05-05   Deviance: <Spassky69: You know how hard it is to talk to Spassky on there since like there's so many people talking to him (mostly in Spanish which some native Russians translate words he doesn't know). It's crazy you can try tomorrow. He usually gets on like midnight Paris time or 6 pm New York Time or 2 am Moscow. Actually he said to this guy on there "Deviance" that he knows of the site but hasn't registered. Then he got disconnected again today and that's the last I heard of him.> yes, I did speak with the user "GMSpassky" on chess21, though I doubt it is really Spassky. If you check his profile he indicates that he has a FIDE rating of 2200. Last I spoke with him, he told me to tell everyone here that he is a computer.

However, there is a user on chess21 named "IGMSpassky" who plays at a GM level and has told me personally that he is indeed Boris Spassky. His profile states that he is from France and that one of his favorite players in Anderssen. His record on chess21 is almost perfect, and he achieved a GM rating there in a very short time. Though this is not concrete proof, interpret this how you like.

Apr-05-05   Backward Development: 1.d4 Nc6 i've known as the Queen's Knight Defense, but I suppose that isn't really a proper name.
Apr-27-05   pubs r us: Given the length of NN's career - I think he might be that guy in the movie Highlander.

cu8sfan: <he might be that guy in the movie Highlander.> Interesting point, especially since he's proven that he knows how to play chess, too: http://imdb.com/title/tt0104627/
Apr-27-05   pubs r us: <cu8sfan>, I notice that NN's last few victories came against Gerardo F Barbero in the mid 90s. Perhaps somebody could contact GM Barbero and ask him if NN punctuated his victores by yelling "There can be only one!"
Apr-28-05   allanon880: NN, you are the great one. You may not win very many, but you show us how to loose in style.

TheAlchemist: <pubs r us> If NN has 9 victories against Barbero, one could wonder why wasn't Barbero called NN as well. He surely played like him, I mean, 9 losses, come on :p
Jun-09-05   chesswonders: This one's dedicated to the legendary NN! :)

Scholar's mate

My King's pawn to the frontier
And you do the same
To gain control over the center
Is the opening game

Then I move my King's Bishop
To attack your weakest pawn
But you bring your Knight up
To protect your center pawn

Your being a novice makes me play
My own Queen to the third rank
Mate in one on its way
Stop it now and you can

You did not see the threat
Hence you move your Rook pawn
On my win now I bet
The scholar's mate on f seven
