  Benzol: Peter Vasilievich Dubinin
Born 30th June 1909 in Gorky
Died 1983
An IM in 1950 and CGM in 1962
He was USSR Correspondence champion in 1957 (joint).
Jul-21-06  TheSlid: His freinds, in Gorky, on the river Oka, used to refer to Pyotr as "Our Champion, our Botvinnik" - from "The Soviet School of Chess" by Kotov and Yudovich.

I first read the book many years ago now and it stuck in my mind that the Dubinins of this world are actually the reason for (Soviet) domination and not the Botvinniks.

"Piotr V. Dubinin (1909-1983) was already a USSR Championship finalist OTB in the 1930s. He became a FIDE IM in 1950 and an ICCF grandmaster in 1962. His best result was finishing runner-up to A. O'Kelly in 3rd CC World Championship."
