(born Aug-03-1827, died Nov-20-1897) Russia

[what is this?]
Brother of Dmitri Semenovich Urusov, Prince Sergei Urusov (sometimes rendered "Urusoff" or "Ouroussoff"), was a friend of Tolstoy and one of the strongest Russian players of the mid-nineteenth century, after Alexander Petrov.

His legacy lives on today, as the gambit 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nf6 3.d4!? is widely known as the "Urusov Gambit."

Honza Cervenka: Sergey was born in 1827 and died in 1897. After him the Urusov Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nf6 3.d4!?) got its name. His brother Dmitri was born in 1829 and died in 1903.
Feb-24-05  cuendillar: Wouldn't that make Dmitri Semenovich Urusov a prince as well?

Honza Cervenka: <So he's a prince?> Yes, Urusovs were descendants of Nogai Horde's royal dynasty of its founder Edigu. They were direct progeny of Khan Urus of Nogai Horde and Tzar of Kasimov and they became Russian princes Urusovs after conversion from Islam to Orthodox Christianity in the late 16th or early 17th century. One prince Peter Urusov killed False Dmitry II in 1610. Btw, Yusupovs (though as far as I know with no connection to Artur Yusupov) and some other Russian noble families are descendants of Nogai Horde royal dynasty as well.

Maatalkko: So if his name is Semenovich, that means he descended from Semen, correct?
Oct-01-11  Ropitybopity: That's not the Urusov gambit, it's the Ponziani gambit, which usually continues with 3...exd4 4.Qxd4. The Urusov gambit occurs on move four with 3...exd4 4.Nf3!? gambitting the pawn on e4.
