During an Easter tournament, 13 year-old IM Richard Wang became their youngest Alberta champion to date in 2012. (1) In 2011, he won the CYCC U-14 with 6/7 to advance to the WYCC. He finished with 6.5/9 (10th overall after tie-breaks) at the 2011 World Youth Chess Championship U-14 category in Brazil. In December of 2012, he won the Canadian Junior chess championship (2) with 6.5/9 and earlier in November he played at the World Youth Championship (2012) in the U-14 category to place 3rd. In 2010, he achieved a Canadian National Master certification, tied for 1st-3rd with Terry Song and Michael Song with 5.5/7 in the U-12 CYCC and the year preceeding, tying 2nd-4th (8.5/11 - 3rd after tie-breaks) in the under-12 age group 2009 World Youth Chess Championships. He placed tied for 10th-20th (16th on tiebreaks) at the U16 World youth chess championship in 2013. He has been coached by Miodrag Perunovic and Eugenio Torre and was ranked 8th in the world for his age ceiling of active players for September 2010. At the World youth team chess Olympiad (4), he scored 6.5/9 in games played on the team's 3rd board.
