GM 'JOEY' ANTONIO LED QUEZON CITY CHESS TEAM RULES MALAYSIA TOURNEY
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA -- TWELVE-time National Open Champion Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. proved unstoppable at the top board to lead Quezon City Chess Team to the 32nd ASTRO Rapid Open Team Chess Championship 2012 late Saturday night at the Ballroom, 5th Floor, Cititel Mid Valley Hotel here.
GM Antonio defeated Indian Sharma Hemant to lead Quezon City Chess Team to a 3-1 in over Chess Association of India A in the eight and penultimate round.
He beat countryman National Master Efren Bagamasbad in the ninth and final round as Quezon City Chess Team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Marfori, Philippines, 2.5-1.5, but still emerged overall champion in the 66-team tournament.
The Quezon City Chess Team finished with seven wins, one draw, one loss, 15 Match Points and 24.5 board points in nine outings.
Apart from Antonio who also topped the 9th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Chess Festival Combined Rapid 2012 and Blitz Open Championship last August 19-23, the Quezon City Chess Team was made up of GM Darwin Laylo, Bengt Largo and Marlon Constantino.
With the victory, Quezon City Chess Teamís performance boosted the nationís morale, said National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Vice President and Bayan Muna Party-List Representative Neri Javier Colmenares.
One of the interesting match-ups in the third round with 10th seed Quezon City Chess Team blasted top seed Team Chesskidz. Antonio toppled GM Nelson Mariano, Laylo subdued GM Buenaventura "Bong" Villamayor and Constantino routed Joel Hicap. IM Richilieu Salcedo III edged Largo in Board 3 to saved his Team Chesskidz in a possible shut-out loss.
Multi-titled Tagaytay City Chess Team of National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Secretary-General Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr. wound up second after beating fellow 14 Match Points 3rd placer Marfori and 4th placer Chesskidz Shock Troopers in a tie break points.
The Tagaytay City Chess Team was composed of Roel Abelgas, Rhobel Legaspi, National Masters Ali Branzuela and Edmundo Gatus.
The Tandag City Chess Team of National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. finished with 13 Match Points, good for a share 5th to 8th placers with MasterMind, KL Fool Gone Mad (MY/State) and Chess Tigers (MY).
The Tandag City Chess Team is comprised by Grandmasters John Paul Gomez and Richard Bitoon and non-masters Leonado Alidani and Jimson Bitoon.
