RUBEN FELGAER
(born Apr-04-1981, 44 years old) Argentina

[what is this?]
Grandmaster Felgaer was coach/captain of the 2012 Olympiad team for Argentina, and Argentine champion in 2001, 2007, 2008 and 2010. He qualified for both the World Cup (2011) and World Cup (2013) from the zonals and performed above expectations on each occasion by reaching the 2nd round, after defeating higher rated opponents in the 1st round (Vladimir Malakhov in 2011, and Alexander Riazantsev in 2013). In the World Cup 2011 he drew Ukranian prodigy Yaroslav Zherebukh in the 2nd round classical games mini-match, but lost in the 25 minute rapid game tiebreker. In the World Cup 2013 he lost to Ukrainian GM Alexander Areshchenko in the 2nd round.

najdorf was already a strong player when he came to argentina. fide rating system did not exist when najdorf was on the elite.

i was comparing felgaer to campora, spangenberg, zarnicki, ricardi.

Felicitaciones y que tengas muchos más exitos Rubén!

Aug-14-08  Augalv:

Ruben Felgaer won The 83rd Argentine Championship wich took place 30th July - 11th August 2008. IMs Anton Kovalyov, Diego Flores and GM Ruben Felgaer all finished on 8/11. Ruben Felgaer won a rapid (g15+10s/move) playoff amongst these players to take the title.

Congrats Rubén!

Feb-05-10  ConLaMismaMano: GM Felgaer has poor nerves but when in form can be a formidable opponent. He's a long time friend of GM Bent Larsen.

Larsen has mentioned in various occasions that Felgaer has the talent to reach a 2700+ rating but as i mentioned before he first has to learn to manage his nerves.

Apr-04-10  wordfunph: how many players fail to succeed because of the so-called nerves?

for one, i know Chucky then GM Ruben Felgaer...who else?

count me in...i'm the third. :-)

happy birthday GM Felgaer!

Fusilli: Hmm... is a 2600 player defeating a 2700 player a "major" upset, as stated in the bio? GM Felgaer is not part of the elite GM club, but I doubt Malakhov or Riazantsev are either...
Nov-14-14  HSOL: Wouldn't something like "He qualified for the 2011 and 2013 World Cup from the zonals and performed above expectations both times by reaching the 2nd round after having defeated higher rated opponents in the 1st round (Malakhov 2011 and Riazantsev 2013)" be more suitable. I reckon as the biography is written, it implies Felgaer is a significantly weaker player than he is.

Fusilli: <HSOL> That's my point. I thought that maybe it was my Argentine nationalism speaking, but I am glad you share my interpretation.

perfidious: My only point on which I disagree with what <HSOL> has posted is that it seems redundant to state that a player has outperformed expectation by winning the first round in each event over a higher-rated opponent.

I am pleased that a fellow biographer edited this and am merely striving to keep Felgaer's bio as clean as possible and convey meaningful information without prolixity.

Nov-15-14  HSOL: <perfidious>: You're spot on. My wording could definitely be improved upon. I probably tried too hard to get all the information in.
Nov-15-14  zanzibar: I think I agree with perfidious, but I have to go look up <prolixity> first!

perfidious: <zanzibar> The definition will be succinct, to be sure.

Fusilli: <perfidious>, <zanzibar>, <HSOL>. Yes, it is redundant, even though it is an improvement over the previous wording.

Perhaps eliminate the "above expectations" part altogether? And on second thought, I think I would go as far as deleting the reference to higher-rated opponents! Because, really, if we were to note on a player's bio that they defeated someone with an Elo 80-100 points above them in the World Cups, how many players have been wronged by omission of this on their bios? I'm speaking without checking, but I suspect at least a few... I think qualifying for the second round on both occasions speaks for itself about Felgaer's strength. The reader can always go check out who Malakhov and Riazantsev are. Now, had he eliminated Ivanchuk, or Morozevich, or... well, in that case I would call that an upset.

In any event, for the record, I appreciate the edit already done, it is surely an improvement!

perfidious: <Fusilli> Indeed it is; moreover, I agree on the whole that we do not need to have every move of every player's career outlined, as appears the case in some bios.

Fusilli: <perfidious> And while on the subject of Argentine players, I posted some suggestions on Daniel Campora 's page, to improve his bio. I'm going to post now on the biographer's bistro, to alert other editors.

This is a pretty nice game, btw: Gulko vs Campora, 1996.

May-15-20  technical draw: It seems this GM stopped playing at age 34 in 2015. Anyone know why? No info on Wiki.
