Sergey Nikolaevich von Freymann born in 1882 was one of the strongest masters around the time of the Russian revolution. He beat Eugene Aleksandrovich Znosko-Borovsky in a match in 1911, was four times Uzbekistan Champion and finished 2nd in the 1929 USSR Championship.

  Calli: Skinner and Verhoeven give the last name as "Freiman". Most Russian sources also use "Freiman" , for instance, http://www.ruschess.com/Rusbase/USS... - Sergey didn't do too well in 1934! The St. Petersburg tournament book, however, does go with "von Freymann".

So what is the story? Why did he sometimes use a German version of his name? <Sneaky Pete> - maybe you know? :-)
