  lostemperor: <Benzol>, this is him also: Tan. Tan Hiong Liong is his official name. Tan being his last name, because in Chinese names the last name comes first. And he is still alive somewhere in Indonesia, I've heard. A remarkable player. So it is Hiong Liong Tan if you no what I mean <;)

  lostemperor: There are 29 Tans in this database. Two of them is he. This Tan Hiong Liong and Tan Hoang. Good, there used to be four of him;).
Aug-25-08  myschkin: . . .

He is an is an "Indonesian–Dutch" chess master. His name has a "Chinese-Indonesian"** origin :)

<Hiong Liong Tan> European syntax

<Hiong Liong> ~ given name

<Tan> ~ family name

Chinese origins - from the name of the state of Tan during the Zhou dynasty. Wu Wang, who established the Zhou dynasty in 1122 B.C., gave the state of Tan to a descendant of the model emperor Yu (2205–2198 bc), with the status of Viscount. Descendants adopted the name of the state Tan as their surname.

* preferable

Addendum:
In 1602 the Dutch established the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and became the dominant European power. Following bankruptcy, the VOC was formally dissolved in 1800, and the government of the Netherlands established the Dutch East Indies as a nationalized colony. For most of the colonial period, Dutch control over these territories was tenuous; only in the early 20th century did Dutch dominance extend to what was to become Indonesia's current boundaries.

** Darn, while typing I could ask a friend of mine. He is from Shanghai and said it [Hiong Liong] is not Chinese (Feng_kai sagte: deswegen kann ich leider auch nicht viel dazu sagen [trotzdem danke Quarknase]), but he assumed <Tan> is the family name, too.

Uff, nochmal Glück gehabt :D

But we could ask User: fictionist in that case !

  whiteshark: " <Tan>, to be sure, quickly surpassed Schilp [as best Dutch go player] too, and was the first in the Netherlands to obtain a Dan in go. Tragically, a mental breakdown in early 1963 put an end to his careers in both games. At 24, he was repatriated to his native Indonesia where he is supposed to be still living in Bandung - but his Dutch chess friends never saw him again.

...

<Hoan Liong Tan> might have gone far as a chess player - he was the first Indonesian who became an International Master, and playing for Indonesia at the Leipzig 1960 Olympiad, he won the gold medal on board 4, with 16.5 from 20. "
