Tjeerd (Theo) Daniel van Scheltinga was born on March 6, 1914 in Amsterdam. He learned to play chess when he was 16. In 1936, he took 3rd in the Dutch Championship. In 1947, he tied for 1st in the Dutch Championship with Max Euwe, but lost the play-off. He was awarded the IM title in 1965. He represented the Netherlands at the Olympiads of 1937, 1939, 1950, 1952 and 1954 and his best tournament result was 1st at Beverwijk 1947.
