Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-12-05   fenno: Ujtumen's openings, according to this database:

As white:
always 1.e4,
against 1.e4 e5 always 2.Nf3,
against 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 always Bb5

As black:
One Sicilian against 1. e4, otherwise always 1. - e5

I guess this is about the best level one can reach by being a pure 1.e4 player (or a Ruy Lopez specialist). Or is it?

Apr-12-05   aw1988: Fischer perhaps?
Apr-13-05   fenno: No. Fischer was not a pure 1.e4 player, to be exact, although it was a surprise when he played something else.

  sneaky pete: <Karpova> Greco's collection includes 1 Bird's opening and 3 Queen's gambits, one of which (1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 3.e3 b5 4.a4 c6 5.axb5 cxb5 6.Qf3 .. and wins) is missing in this database.

ok, i choose Philidor.

Apr-14-05   fenno: Yes, Philidor and Morphy must be accepted, but they are 'ancient'. Who else?

  Karpova: beer
100% 1.e4
Apr-14-05   fenno: Well, beer is even more ancient, but yes, it has an effect on how chess is played even today!

Are you suggesting that no chessplayer controlled by beer can play anything else than 1.e4 as white? ;)

  Karpova: :-)

Bologan seems to be a good candidate.

keypusher: But Bologan doesn't often play 1...e5 as black.

Morphy played the French once and the Sicilian rarely -- maybe only once?

Apr-14-05   fenno: Bologan even seems to be changing from 1.e4 to other 1st moves.
Apr-14-05   knightspot: but Ujtumen was alone in first place at the Interzonal in 1970, after three rounds. He was in line to be the next champion - the only thing that got in his way were those annoying last 20 rounds, and he ended up 22nd our of 24 :(
Apr-15-05   fenno: Kateryna Lahno seems to be a pure 1.e4 player, and her best rating is better than Ujtumen's best. Lahno is not ancient either, so she is the epitome of a modern 1.e4 player. Or is she?

Karpova: i think she'll expand her opening repertoire in the near future. her main defense against 1.e4 seems to be pirc-ufimzev, btw.
