Oct-31-10  Jim Bartle: The book will contain the score of 10 Andersson games, with no annotations, and will be 200 pages long.

(That's meant to be a joke.)

Nov-03-10  Festy: <Juergen Kaufeld> : Thanks for the update Juergen. That's a great news !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nov-06-10  Juergen Kaufeld: It`s title is "Grandmaster Chess Strategy", date for release April 2011, but you can already pre-order :-) Thanks for your interest!

pandaTT: you should call it "Aikido with chess pieces". great quote from DieHard there.
Feb-24-11  M.D. Wilson: The best endgame players of the Olden Days (pre-1950s) were Rubinstein, Capablanca and Lasker. The best endgame players from 1950-1995-ish were Korchnoi, Fischer and Karpov.

Kramnik and Carlsen are the premier endgame masters of this era, although and GMs from all eras have mastered all aspects of the game, including the endgame, some players stand out from the crowd.

Mar-07-11  Festy: Ulf has to be in the list of Top 10 greatest end game players ever.

Maatalkko: Ulf has a 64.8% drawing percentage in this database. Is that the highest among GMs?

HeMateMe: This Ulf seems to have a quiet, drawing style.

But his namesake, the Ulf of North America hockey, had quite a different persona. He's number 5, in the green jersey:

If we could just bring that kind of action to chess, well, who knows what might happen?

Caissanist: The 1970s seem to have been the "golden age" for draws in chess, with many players from that era drawing well over half their games (at least in this database). So far as I know, the highest draw percentage here is for Bruno Parma, at 67.8%.

However, Andersson and Zoltan Ribli do have the distinction of having drawn the last 28 games they have played, which must be close to a record at least.

Apr-03-11  midknightblue: his book is out - in English.

Among the ones who are praising the book ... Peter Leko "this book opens your eyes !".

From a draw granmaster to another. ;-D

micartouse: Excited, I just ordered one! Don't really have time to study chess, but it sounds like a quality book.

micartouse: <Grandmaster Chess Strategy> 15 chapters, each one has about 5 or 6 Andersson games. Some of the chapters:

Control of the D-File
Fighting against the Hedgehog
The Catalan Endgame
Rook and Minor Piece

It doesn't look like one of those generic old strategy books, it looks like specific weapons are discussed with a hero to guide our play. It seems like the authors really enjoyed making it, which a reader always appreciates. A nice introduction by GM Leko, one of the protagonist's strongest scalps.

Apr-28-11  Helloween: Can you imagine going against, arguably, the most solid player in history, at the height of his powers?

Look at the exchange sac and the quick draining of all life from Black's position in Ulf Andersson vs Larsen, 1983 .

The game was played in Linares 1983, when Ulf was around 2700(non-inflated)playing strength.

Wyatt Gwyon: I'd rather get slaughtered by Kasparov or Tal in 22 moves than get ground down by Andersson in 62 and not know exactly what the hell happened.

I just bought the book and look very much forward to its arrival; thanks for the preview!

As I wrote back when I thought Ulf had a bit of a different 'slant' on the game - like Miles then and Ding Liren now...

TheFocus: Well, let's see, 15 chapters with 5-6 Andersson games in each = 75-80 games. Easily an 800 page book.

Jul-19-11  WiseWizard: Is anyone familiar with this player? On the front page theres an article about him being a positional master, what's the difference between him and Karpov? How come Karpov was more effective as a positional master?

Ulf Andersson vs Portisch, 1972
Jul-19-11  WiseWizard: A great game. I was hoping someone who was familiar or studied both players could give me an analysis of their styles and explain why Karpov was more successful as a positional player than Anderssen.
