  BishopBerkeley: International GM Valery Beim has a new book out on 19th century American Chess "super-genius" Paul Morphy :

Excerpt:

http://www.chesscafe.com/skittles/s...

("super-genius" was the term used by Garry Kasparov to describe Morphy (on page 6 of the first volume in his "My Great Predecessors" series.)

I hope it's a good book!

Here's the blurb over at the selling site:

=====

Paul Morphy: A Modern Perspective

by Valeri Beim, 164pp. (Russell Enterprises 2005)

In 1857, a soft-spoken genius from New Orleans burst upon the chess scene. Paul Morphy dazzled the chess world with breathtaking combinations seemingly arising out of thin air. In his brief chess career, he was universally recognized as the best in the world.

In Paul Morphy: A Modern Perspective, international grandmaster Valeri Beim takes a close look at the play of the mid-19th century champion, putting his games under a modern, 21st-century analytical microscope. The result is a fresh and instructive look at the strategy and tactics of the American legend, and their relevance to the modern approach to the royal game.

Valeri Beim, is an international grandmaster now residing in Vienna. He is a respected chess instructor and author; this is his fifth chess book.

  Timothy Glenn Forney: His books on Chess Strategy are awesome too.Just added to my collection."Lessons in Chess Strategy"-Gambit and" How to Play Dynamic Chess"-Gambit, great books.
Mar-31-06   pazzed paun: so has anyone bought the Morphy book?

  whiskeyrebel: amazing how few posts here. He's a great teacher; he must be to have penetrated my thick dome. I'm just finishing off "how to play dynamic chess" and have learned quite a bit including insight towards clearing up my most nagging, irritating OTB problem ( winning a won position in which you just know there must be a break through ). I've tapped out a quotation on my forum page and am cross referencing it here.
Jul-20-07   Ziggurat: <whiskey> I agree, he is underrated as a writer. I really liked both <How to play dynamic chess> and the Morphy book, which I think highlighted Morphy's genius without shying away from exposing his mistakes.

  whiskeyrebel: I'll certainly be looking for a copy of his Morphy book. Beim is further proof that the highest rated GM's are not neccessarily the best teachers. This man really understands what it's like for us amateur geeks.
Sep-29-07   Alphastar: I have his book "how to calculate chess tacics". That's some really good stuff (although, not for low-level players. I'd say 1800+), highly recommended.

  whiskeyrebel: I finally finished "how to calculate chess tactics". Man, what a book. It's not just another attacking exercise workbook. He actually delivers upon the title, applying his line of reasoning towards middle and endgames. He breaks the thought process down into smaller clusters of thought so as to make it practical even for hacks like me. It seems to work hand in glove with my Silman training; no wonder JS raved about it in a review at his site. Beim is one hot writer right now.
