cu8sfan: Surprisingly we don't have any games of our player of the day from before 1950.
Jun-03-07   Prugno: Vincenzo Nestler passed away in Rome on 14-7-1988. He was also a mathematics professor and author of several books on parapsychology.

I remember seeing him in my very first chess tournaments (mid-80s), when I was playing in the lower groups and he was in the A-group (despite being over 70, he was allowed to play there owing to his high national rating).

In those last years he was nearly deaf, but still a solid player with good endgame technique, and very hard to beat.

<cu8sfan> It's true that Nestler was a relatively late starter, but he certainly played before 1950: for instance he came second in the 1937 Italian Championship. The earliest games of his I have found in a booklet by Fiorentino Palmiotto date from 1941, whereas his last published game is apparently a draw against the future GM Kouatly from 1982.

fm avari viraf: <Prugno> Thanks for the info regarding Nestler but how come C.G. didn't know his passing away on 14-7-1988? May his soul rest in peace in Heaven.

Knight13: At least his win against Horowitz is impressive.
