Open Defence: Has Xie stopped playing after 2002 ?
Oct-30-03   sierra: She's coming back. She has been busy with babysitting in last two years.
Mar-23-04   shr0pshire: Xie Jun won the women's world championship title in 1991, stopping the russian domination. She was very young at the time, just turned 21, and she wasn't very well known before that (asian female players were not known at this time).

She has a best game book, and it is fabulously written. I highly recommend it!

Mar-23-04   shr0pshire: Btw on the chessmetrics page, in 1992 she was rated higher than kramnik in the top hundred players in the world.

Xie Jun rated 48th in the world with a chessmetrics rating of 2626.

Vladimir Kramnik rated 49th in the world with a chessmetrics rating of 2626.

I think that is pretty impressive.

Vischer: i think jun is her first name and xie is her last name. See http://www.fide.com/ratings/card.ph..., it says Xie, Jun.
Jun-23-04   luckytrader: Yes, Xie is her last name since surname goes first for Chinese. "Jun" actually means army; please refer to her book for details.
Sep-19-04   alexapple: Xie jun will participate the 2004 olympic team championship.
Sep-19-04   alexapple: Xie jun's brilliant win against Zhukova in 2001 world championship is still missing.
Sep-23-04   alexapple: Xie Jun's notable games should include her win against Zhukova in the 2001 women's world championship.

iron maiden: <alexapple> Notable games are simply games that are included in users' game collections. So you can make that game on the "notable" list by adding it to a collection of yours.
Sep-23-04   alexapple: The game I mentioned is not in the database of chessgames.com,how can I do that? :-(

iron maiden: Try the PGN Upload Utility.
Sep-23-04   alexapple: Okay, thank u so much. I've already uploaded it. The game is from 2000 wwcc not 2001 wwcc. sorry!:-)
Oct-22-04   uzeromay: with 4.5/5, an impressive 2783 performance rating so far at the 2004 Olympiad.
Oct-22-04   alexapple: Xie Jun's performance is excellent and unbelievable!!
May-28-05   lentil: A year late!...

benzol,

Regarding pronunciation of her name. Xie: there is really no English equivalent to the sound transliterated as 'X'. It denotes a 'retroflex' consonant, sort of like an S, but subtly different. If you can do that tongue-whistle (not the lip pucker-whistle) where you tuck your tongue under your lower teeth and make a sort of groove with your tongue, then blow through it, you will get the general idea. The I is pronounced like the French I, and the E is more like 'Eh'; the two vowels are both pronounced.

Jun is also difficult; the J is more like dz (our english J is transliterated as zh); the U is like in PUT. Fortunately, the N is as expected.

(incidentally, xie xie means thank-you)

Jun-07-05   WTHarvey: Here are some puzzles from Jun's games: http://www.wtharvey.com/xie.html
Jun-08-05   bomb the bishop: thanks again, WTHarvey, for the puzzles, they are always an excellent way to improve one's tactical ability and at the same time get to know the way the chessplayer thinks
Jun-13-05   mormonchess: This is an awesome chess site! I enjoy reading everybody's posts, and I admire everyone's passion for chess. I'm starting to log into this site daily now.
Aug-24-05   SEVEN: A picture of her is in http://en.chinabroadcast.cn/2241/20...
Apr-15-06   IMDONE4: Jun is an ingenious GM and I have been lucky enough on occasion (several years ago) to learn from her.

Nov-26-08   Ladolcevita: <lentil>
I have a simple way to pronounce her name
Xie
you can pronounce like She("e"like in"Bed")
Jun
you can pronounce like Drun("u"like "ea"in dream"....

Though anyway, the exact pronunciation is different from English pronunciation, but its pretty close...
