Dec-29-02   pawntificator: Zoltan Varga! Very cool name. Zoltan! Reminds me of Dude where's my car.

  Sneaky: Cool, yes--but quite common:
Zoltan Gyimesi, Zoltan Von Balla, Zoltan Ribli, Zoltan Almasi, Zoltan Medvegy etc. etc. Maybe we should get all these guys together and have a special tournament: <<The Battle of the Zoltans!!>> hehe
Dec-30-02   ughaibu: Wasn't there a film (movie) entitled Hound Of Zoltan? Or was it a short story by Agatha Christie?
Dec-31-02   pawntificator: Wow, there are a lot of Zoltans. I can't imagine anyone naming a little baby Zoltan.

Sneaky: The name I can't imagine giving a baby is SMBAT. Please don't tell me how to pronounce it, I don't even want to know!

Of course I refer to the extremely strong Grandmaster Smbat G Lputian, who was born in the great Armenian Vowel Famine of '58! ;-)

Dec-31-02   ughaibu: I guess with a surname like that you have to dig a little deeper for something special. It's a good name; Sinbad + Gulliver (the) Lilliputian(s), is my interpretation.
Dec-31-02   pawntificator: The Great Armenian Vowel Famine! I need to brush up on my history.
Jan-19-03   ksadler: Does anyone have any biographical information on this player? I follow his games as he plays Alekhine's Defense, but no *nothing* about him.
Jan-14-04   platonov: The hungarian 'Zoltan' name comes from the turkish-ottoman 'sultan'. All mentioned players (Gyimesi, Balla, Ribli, Almasi and Medvegy) are hungarian players. Varga Zoltan is top 10 at current hungarian rating list (anyway did you know that the word ELO comes from a hungarian mathematic professor's name?), and surely one of the most creative players today at the 2500 level. ksadler, i have biographical information on him, and he is not an unknown player as he was hungarian national team member in 1992 first and he is still today.
