I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since. :)

<<<<<<< MAJOR CHESS SITES <<>>>>>>>>>

<< Correspondence chess <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is a relatively new site. Quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means HEAVY on the resources. If you have an older computer or limited net access, don't even bother to register. Note for ChessCube players: I'm finding that the site works best (i.e. is least buggy) with Google's Chrome browser. If IE, FireFox, or Opera are giving you trouble, try accessing the site with Chrome (despite its not being one of the browsers recommended by them).

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <World Champion Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> thanks for the explanation of the <Millipede Limit>.

Who knew?

Also, I was very happy to hear of the vein of your current TOP SECRET research- if you uncover any new material on that mysterious topic, you should send it straight off to <Edward Winter>.

And then give yourself a Chess History Research Nobel Prize.

Also, I'm happy you are interested in a project on the TOP SECRET and also willing to cash in your GET OUT OF JAIL FREE CARD for that SECRET DOCUMENT to be named, and hopefully constructed, later.

Very eerie coincidence eh?

I sent <suenteus po> the top secret request today but there's no rush on that.

Luckily we have lots of time. Time to get it right.

The President of my old Chess Club felt so guilty they don't have any meetings this summer that he phoned me to go meet him at a Mall to play some three-way Rapids with him and the Club Treasurer.

Best part is they are the two strongest players at the Club.

The <Mighty Benzol> alerted <Mir Sultan Khan> fans to the existence of this book so I'm assuming it's worth having.

The only "review" I can find on the internet is the actual Dust Jacket blurb from the book.

LOL!

That's great!!! Guess I have now joined the ranks of those who always say that there's nothing like OTB play. ;)

(Although I also think there's nothing like online blitz, and there's nothing like online correspondence, and... etc... :p )

OK, there's nothing like chess!

Also great on your compiling resources for the upcoming projects. :)

Oh I has newz too - I can has AC! As in, already installed and in working order. So I think I will return to solid state any day now, and mental functions may resume after that <and> catching up with some sleep.

Yes we can has books from Amazon although they are not cheap on "International priority post" but I need them here in time for me to scan all the TOP SECRET photos and such.

I'm going to play in about two hours and I'm very nervous.

I haven't played strong opposition OTB for over three years now.

And yes- there really is nothing like chess.

I honestly don't understand people who aren't fascinated by every aspect of it.

  jessicafischerqueen: Heh I did in fact enjoy it- and boy was I rusty too.

We played three games in a row at One hour each Time Control.

So he beat me two in a row in about 3 and a half hours.

Time for one more game and I have Black and I said no way I'm going home with ZERO so I managed to win the last game with a trick I had done some analysis on previously-

If White opens with the King's Indian Attack, if he's not careful, Black can equalize almost immediately by transposing to a sort of Sicilian Defence setup, but a really nice one- with a pawn on d5 and *then* an early c5 push, which White should take steps to prevent.

He didn't, and I had a very pleasant position as a result.

My opponent's current rating is 1860 USCF and also he is a very fine gentleman as befits a Club President.

I had so much fun!! I will meet him again in two weeks.

  Annie K.: <Jess: <Heh I did in fact enjoy it- and boy was I rusty too.>>

Very good - did you make creaking sounds? ;)

Srsly, really nice going! Beating an 1860 player after a little warm-up is a clear indication that you belong on one side of a chessboard that can has a serious chess player on the other side.

You should play more often - corr., blitz, anything - just to stay in touch with the game. :)

Good for you on the extra session too!

Aug-11-10

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> thanks so much for the encouragment!

I didn't write down any of the scores but yesterday I did manage to remember the opening I was describing-

It's Black (me) to move here and my Engine shows a slight edge for White, but I think Black has a very comfortable position here.

If she plays her cards right, that <fanchettied> LSB will remain imprisoned for much of the game.

And in the case of this game, it did.

Whee!

  Annie K.: <I Can Has Blitz>

So, I beat this opponent with a cheap trick:

[Event "FICS rated blitz game"]

[Black "NN"]
[WhiteElo "1439"]

[Result "1-0"]

...and he re-challenged me, perhaps to prove that was just a fluke.

So this time I beat him fair and square - with a tactical combo <some people> may also refer to as a "cheap trick". ;p

First game- I don't think your play was "cheap," especially given that Blitz games are almost all won on a tactic overlooked. It's not your fault he didn't see Mate in One!

This here is a nice tactic that probably threw him off a bit, picking up the exchange with a nice discovery:

OOPS his Knight has escaped to the wrong square- I think he should have blocked and sacced the exchange here with

It's a beautiful finish <Annie> without doubt- and it's no small feat to see a smothered mate that far in advance, especially in Blitz-

  Annie K.: <chancho> nice voice, and the lyrics tell an interesting story - who could ask for more? Thanks for another very good choice. :)

<Jess> thanks for the cheering and all the work you put into the analyses! Well, I called the first game "cheap" because actually 23.Ne4 can be safely countered with 23...dxe4, since my Q on f3 would then be attacked as much as his. 23.Ne4 wasn't exactly a blunder, since 23.Ne4 dxe4 24.Qxe4 (mate threat) Bf5 25.Rxd6 Bxe4 26.Bxe4 regains the material, but it didn't <have to> "work" - I was gambling on his not wanting to give up his Q, a common reluctance with many players.

As for the second game, I usually mutter a "thank you, Emrald" after such wins. ;) The easy pattern recognition of lots of tactical themes, gained from many hours of practice there, has been an invaluable asset to my play. And btw, I maintain that Emrald is a better teacher than ChessTempo, <because> it's uncustomizable!

<Weevil Not Surrender - The Saga Continues>

Heh - I actually ran into that same opponent again yesterday, and two more games were added to the "match"! :D

Not very good games really, but just for the anecdote's sake -

[Event "FICS rated blitz game"]
[Date "2010.08.13"]
[White "NN"]
[Black "AnnieK"]
[WhiteElo "1368"]
[BlackElo "1466"]

[Result "0-1"]

1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. e3 a6 4. Bd3 Nh6 5. O-O Bf5 6. Ne5 Nxe5 7. dxe5 c6 8. e4 dxe4 9. Bxh6 exd3 10. Bd2 dxc2 11. Qc1 cxb1=Q 12. Rxb1 Bxb1 13. Qxb1 Qxd2 White resigns 0-1

Why did I play 4...Nh6? Just for the heck of it. :p I figured he would want to "punish" me for the unconventional move, that flies in the face of a certain beginners' rule , and I had a pretty good idea how he would go about it. But nobody said I <had> to regain my material by recapturing at the same square he captured on, the way he expected me to! ;)

[Event "FICS rated blitz game"]
[Date "2010.08.13"]
[White "AnnieK"]
[Black "NN"]
[WhiteElo "1472"]

Poor guy... fell for yet another trick. ;) I don't mind at all saying that I'm a cheap tactician... even five times very fast! :p

My rating, which has sunk to the embarrassing 1300's area in the past month, has climbed back to my usual upper half of the 1400's since I got my air conditioner unit up and working. I think I'm going to count that AC as a "piece advantage". ;)

Check your youtube when you get a chance- I just put you on the private view list to look at a draft of Part One.

I still can't figure out how to "store" a custom color on Windows Crappy Movie Maker. There mightn't be a way. So I have to synchronize the colors on the very last draft after we all sign off on it.
