| zanshin: <CIO> Glad you opened your forum! It looks like we have more than just karate and chess as mutual interests. I must admit though that I never got nearly as good as you did in karate! What did you compete in: kata or kumite? |
 |

 |
| Check It Out: <Z> At the national level I always competed in both. Internationally I focused on kumite. I don't compete anymore, but I love kata and bunkai. Here's an upcoming tournament I run: (In the banner picture from a recent tournament in Budapest, Hungary , I'm the referee) http://www.westcoastopen.com I watch MMA whenever I get a chance. Anderson Silva and BJ Penn are my favorite fighters right now. You're Filipino, right? My wife is pacific islander from Guam, where we got married. She's Chamorro/Filipina. Love that food (Pancit, Adobo, fish, red rice, meat) They call Adobo Estufao on Guam. http://chamorrofood.net/ mmmmmmmmm, good! |

| zanshin: <CIO> Yes, I was born in the Philippines, and naturalized US in 2000. In addition to everything else, we also share interests in food ;-) I will definitely check out that site you mentioned. As for karate, I was proficient in kihon and kata, but really sucked at kumite - and of course never competed internationally. I only competed in the nationals in England twice, and only because they were requirements: one for 1st kyu, the other for shodan. This was where I trained in England http://www.higashi.org.uk/ I got my dan grade at the Ogwen course in Wales. |

| zanshin: PS I also played guitar in a few rock bands - in high school and a couple in grad school. But my taste is not quite as metallic as yours ;-) |

| Red October: I mainly play a strat copy (ply wood) but go figure it has a nice tone... like blues based rock mainly (ZZ top) but played Metal a fair bit too, love playing slide |

| zanshin: <Red October: I mainly play a strat copy > <RO> Me too - a 'Starcaster'. When my brother was here, he asked if it was a strat and I told him it was an 'import model', but that unlike the Philippines, that meant the cheap copy. If memory serves me right, didn't you also do s-h-i-t-o ryu karate? |
 |

 |
| Red October: yup I did study a little in a school of s-h-i-t-o ryu Karate, when I was a little girl, funny come to think of it, its now gonna be almost 20 years since I did !!!!! |

| Check It Out: <RO: love playing slide> I play a homemade strat a friend of mine made, and also an ESP with humbuckers for the harder stuff. I'm not very good at slide but love that sound. Have you heard of this pro guy, Sonny Landreth? He plays fretted notes on the left side of the slide at the same time! Amazing. I grew up playing blues and early Zep, but my taste have always run towards the harder stuff for whatever reason. Here's some recordings of a band I was in that is now defunct: http://myspace.com/shogunrockband <Z> Neat website; man we have a lot in common. I was playing through some of the games in your collection too, good stuff. |

| zanshin: <CIO> I checked out your group Shogun, and your tournament homepage. I guess you're the ref standing up in the suit ... looking cool ;-) I did some referee work at the Mid-Valley Karate Championships in south Texas. It was tough .. lots of judgement calls in the kumite - action was too fast for me! I thought I would get a break in the kata competitions until I found how hard it is to judge kata you don't know from different styles. I should have expected it - it was an Open. It was hard work, disgruntled parents, no pay, but I got the t-shirts ;-) As for an engine, I suggest you check out chesstoplay chessforum for tips on free engines. Rybka is probably the premier engine, you can try a test download from : http://aquariumchess.com/AquariumDe... The newly-released Rybka 3 packages cost about $109 to $139 + postage for Aquarium and Chessbase, respectively. Older versions of Rybka are now free, but you'll need a GUI to run them. Let me know if you need anything further. |

| zanshin: Hey <CIO>, thanks for the note in my forum. No, I did not watch the del la Hoya - Pacquiao match. It was pay-per-view, right? I'll try to catch the re-runs or highlights. The last pay-per-view fight I watched was a Tyson fight when all the black belts in my karate club were treated by the newest shodan (he paid $55 for something like 2 minutes ;-)) To be honest, I didn't think Manny had a chance because he had moved up too much in weight class and was fighting de la Hoya on his home turf. I thought he was a big underdog and am thrilled he won. Filipinos don't really have much to be proud of these days, and Manny has given us something - well, he and Wesley So ;-) |

| chesstoplay: Hi < Check It Out >, Thanks for asking about the Rinus scholarship.
Rinus was a World Team player who passed away suddenly. I've awarded the RS 4 times per year on a quarterly basis. We moved it up a month as the January 1 date had too many holiday conflicts. So the year now begins with the February 1st RS.
I've used the GM team games as the selection group.
There has been a posting period where I've asked everyone on the World Team to vote for a non-PM. From the candidates list, I've always gone with the player with the most votes, though that is not required. We started a once a year scholarship, as well, for someone that was always right up there, but never the winner. I've paid the Premium Membership fee.
That's it.
It would be a wonderful thing if you could take it over. Please let me know.
Your friend in chess,
Peter / chesstoplay

| zanshin: <CIO> Thanks for the info. I will be checking out your website. The Disney tournament is tempting. My wife's brother lives in Orlando and she is constantly bugging me to spend time there. I also have a friend here who is still very active in kali/escrima. I think he told me his rank in Jeet Kune Do is Associate Instructor. I'll let him know about your tournament. |

| zanshin: <CIO> Thanks for the link. I hadn't forgotten about the tournament. It's pretty unlikely I will be going because my wife is sick - so even though she's always bugging me to visit her brother in Orlando, she is not feeling up to travel. And besides, I won't get the chance to meet you! Oh well ... maybe next time. |
