May-23-13 FIDE Grand Prix Thessaloniki (2013) (replies)

Eyal: <keypusher> Nakamura repeated a line with which he drew rather easily in a recent game ( Leko vs Nakamura, 2013 ), and Grischuk - not surprisingly - had an improvement ready with 18.Ba4 (instead of f4). Nakamura seemed to go immediately wrong (18...Rf8 instead of Re6) and his ...

May-23-13 Morozevich vs Svidler, 2013 (replies)

Eyal: I haven't watched the press conference after the game, but according to the round report Svidler at first calculated 17...bxc6 18.Bxc6 Rxc6 19.Nxf5, when after 19...Bxf5 20.Nxd5 Qd7 Black is ok, missing that the immediate 19.Nbxd5 is crushing before Nxf5. Also from the round report: ...

Eyal: <Nakamura said he looked at his scoresheet at one point instead of looking at the board, and thought he was repeating moves when he wasn't> [DIAGRAM] I think he was referring to 70...Bf8 which he played in the diagram position, instead of Ra5 (it does look a bit strange to let ...

May-22-13 Kasimdzhanov vs Nakamura, 2013 (replies)

Eyal: <Hikaru Nakamura admitted after the game that he should have played Nh5 on move 7 instead of move 8, and that this would be within his preparation. He mixed up the lines and then lost a tempo with e6-e5. He mentioned that 9...exd5 and 10...Nd7 might have been somewhat better choice.

May-22-13 Svidler vs Bacrot, 2013 (replies)

Eyal: Svidler really made it look easy here. Interesting system by White - 7.Rb1 is one of two alternatives to the main line 7.Nf3, designed to prevent the trade of dark squared bishops (following Bb4+) after the pawn trade on d4. The other one is 7.a3, which Svidler tried (without ...

Eyal: TPRs of the players, compared with their actual ratings (according to the May list) in brackets and number of rating points gained/lost: Karjakin 2886 (2767) +15 Nakamura 2843 (2775) +9 Carlsen 2834 (2868) -4 Svidler 2804 (2769) +5 Anand 2803 (2783) +3 Aronian 2800 ...

May-18-13 Wang Hao vs Anand, 2013 (replies)

Eyal: I'm almost certain that Anand missed 16.Qa5! (or at least how strong it is) when he went for 14...Bxa2. No chess player in his right mind would intentionally enter with Black the position reached after move 16, even if some miracle save might turn out.

She made a snide remark. I made a snide remark. End of story. Move on, nothing to see here.

Domdaniel: Oh yeah. One thing. When and if this starts up again, nobody should have to waste time proving that they've read books.

We've all read books. I never found out what happened to Anzoletta, though. Didn't she marry a Pole?

  jessicafischerqueen: Good evening.

Hi <Larsker>!

What's happening dude?

I was curious if, in the course of your investigations of other languages, you had encountered any of the translations for the following English words and phrases, none of which one HAS to learn, as far as I know:

condescending

supercilious

underqualified

high-handed

jaundiced

a smug, smarmy, and totally unjustified air of affected world-weariness

defensive

callow

sophomoric

craven

pedantic

unwanted

unwelcome

the kid who never got picked when they chose teams for baseball in elementary school

throughly unattractive to women

stultifyingly and appallingly dull

irrelevant

irritating

I find they make for an interesting collection.

Imagine if one person possessed all of these redoubtable and "winning" personality traits.

Have you ever read <How to Win Friends and Influence People>?

I'm pretty sure no one is ever FORCED to read this volume.

However, I recommend it highly.

Best regards,
Jess

  jessicafischerqueen: Good evening.

In the interests of <historical accuracy>:

Regarding the mysterious <she> in one of <Larsker's> posts in this thread.

The "She" who called him "dude" was in fact <Open Defence>.

She did it quite innocently, <Larsker> threw a hissy fit, and upset my friend <Open Defence>.

So I just posted "don't worry about him <Deffi> he's just a crabapple."

Yo Dude!

Why don't you like being called "dude"?

Haven't you seen <The Big Lebowski>?

"The Dude" is clearly the coolest character ever to be written.

Come to think of it, you don't deserve the epithet.

So rest easy, I for one shan't call you "Dude" again.

Good Evening.

  jessicafischerqueen: Good Morning.

<Larsker> last word before I put you on <ignore>, where you can talk with fellow inmates <kamikaze attacke>, <rogge>, and some other "cheery bloke" whose name I can't even remember.

I'm very sorry I called you a <crabapple>.

Reason?

My favorite chess friend just happens to be named <Crabbin>, and therefore I cannot justify the word <crabapple> as an insult.

Also, if you use lots of sugar, <crabapple pie> is excellent.

My old Moms used to make it for us when we wuz kids.

Hi <Deffi>!!

he's so super cool. I wish there was a female equivalent character in film history.

The <Dudette> doesn't sound as cool.

Maybe <the Ho>?

hmmm not quite right.

Any ideas?

  Eyal: Good Evening...

(Let me explain something to you. I'm not "Mr. Lebowski"; you're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. That, or Duder. Or his Dudeness. Or El Duderino, if, you know, you're not into the whole brevity thing--)

HI CRABBIN!!

heh your thread got a bit "feisty" there- sorry but I couldn't resist joining and "trying to calm things down a bit."

Me and <Deffi> are BABES.

I'm a babe now, thanks to you.

Good work <Crabbin>!!

btw, a few things are continuing over at <Frogspawn>...

Oh and I made my first ever post to <CG.com>.

Some punters are convinced that one of the <Kasparov Beliavsky> games is incorrect so I told them.

Heh you are doing <Tal> and I'm doing <kasparov> on ROAD TO CHAMPINSHIP!!

I played through <Tal> Road to crabbinship last year and also his <life and games> cuz I got the book.

What's up cRABBin!!??

lotta <whupass> round your house.

Any priceless vases get broken yet?

Mar-17-08
Premium Chessgames Member
  Eyal: Hey Jess

Luckily, I removed the priceless vases to the basement before it all started.

As it happens, Tal and Kasparov are the only players who made the whole "bottom-up" road to world championship - including zonal, interzonal and candidates - in a single cycle and on their very first attempt (Petrosian also made the whole road in a single cycle, but he already had experience of several previous cycles). Indeed, there was something exceptionally aggressive and energetic about the early styles of both players.

<I made my first ever post to <CG.com>.>

Not quite...

<May-23-07 jessicafischerqueen: Will you guys keep track of who got the millionth post and publish the name? Does the millionth poster win a banana or something?

this is my first ever post to <CG.com> page so please be gentle with me.

DOH!

<vintage Crabbin>!!

Bottoms up to both players!!

<exceptionally aggressive and energetic> chess is what the fans AND historians want.

It's the <rabid wolverine> chess thesis.

I invented it!!

Also, I invented wolverines. In fact, there's no such thing. They are a mythical animal, like werewolves or Eskimos.

Vases or no, I go away for ONE DAY and all hell breaks loose at the <Crabbin's Table>.

What were the odds???

Domdaniel: "Oh no, no, no, it ain't me, dude, it ain't me you're lookin' for. Dude."

<Jess> Not to nitpick or nothin', but a couple of your examples ('sophomoric' and the baseball one) come from the American language rather than the Queen's English.

Although obviously if you say it, it becomes the Queen's English by default.

The Dude endures.

  WBP: Hi everyone!!!

Just looking in from the lam--and there's been a lot of silence on this lam.

Fascinating lit-crit stuff. Many thoughts, but alas, no time to post. (Hrumph!)

My students use "Dude" with no particular gender reference--males call each other Dude, females call each other Dude, and I've heard males call females Dude.

Is this a trait characteristic only of the American Southwest, or does it flourish elsewhere as well?

(Shorter posts mean less occasion for typos! I'm learning!)

Mar-17-08  NakoSonorense: <WBP> I've also heard the term "Dudette"

On a side note, the first (and only) time I played <Jess> on yahoo, I called her "dude", not knowing it was a she. <Jess> said, "why do you call me dude, dude? I'm a Canadian woman, so back off.

Mar-17-08

Domdaniel: <Nako> You have my sympathy. I accidentally used the term "hon" once -- long long ago -- and got whacked back with "I prefer <Jess>, thank you". I've erased the word 'hon' from my vocabulary as a result.

***estly.

Mar-17-08  Ziggurat: <Ironically, the vogue for depressing detective fiction was probably started by the Swedes> You think? Who do you have in mind? Sjöwall and Wahlöö, or someone like Mankell, or ... ?
Mar-17-08

Domdaniel: <Zig> Sjöwall and Wahlöö was about as far as I got. I may be quite wrong, but I think they were doing downbeat detective stories earlier than most.

Now there seems to be a European neo-noir wave. Ken Bruen's 2006 anthology, Dublin Noir, has a story called 'The Piss-Stained Czech' by Olen Steinhauer, which sums it all up for me ...
