My name is A J Goldsby; and I am a (U.S.C.F.) Original LIFE-Master from Pensacola, FL. For just a week or so, I had a dinosaur as my avatar. (I then changed it to a small pic of myself.) I loved dinosaurs even before I knew how to play chess. In fact, when I was five, I told my Grand-mother that I wanted to be a paleontologist ... she said, "Nah. Digging in the dirt? That's stupid! Besides, they don't make any MONEY!!! Go get a good education, and become a doctor!" (So I became a chessmaster instead.)

MostlyAverageJoe: This is chronologically my first comment (had to trash it to make a couple of clarifications).

<LIFE Master AJ: ... If you post the solution, I will delete it.> I hope I did not disclose too much detail to warrant removal of my post ...

First, I have to say this is a very neat puzzle. The shorter solution is on the Monday level, but the longer one (the one I think you had in mind) is probably closer to Wednesday (I doubt that my kid would find it, and he does solve most Tuesdays). The longer one is an extremely enjoyable variation of the first one, where by "extremely enjoayble" I really mean that I failed to find it until firing up a chess engine.

However, I did find two solutions by just gazing at the position. Your puzzle has really three of them, and the first one I found was the longest one (and only then did I notice the shortest one). The longest one is probably easier to find than the medium one in between - the first move is kinda obvious and then the rest is (mostly) forced.

It would be nice if the shortest solution could be somehow eliminated in your puzzle, as the medium one is much more rewarding to find, I think. The longest one is not very educational, and easily removed (see my other post).

Apr-17-07   Tactic101: Also found both solutions. The first one is very easy to see, the second required some thought. However, the second one was pretty educational on how the queen and rooks work together. I like puzzles where there are multiple solutions.

Actually, there might be many solutions, (5-6); however only the first two are really worthwhile.

You are welcome to take a shot at it!

BTW, that problem was composed so to closely resemble a possible game position. (In fact, the motif could have occurred in a tournament game between two 1600 players in Texas.)

Alas, I have no delusions that I could do it ...

Since the topic seems to be exhausted, I'm removing our posts on that issue from my forum (nothing else other than normal maintenance should be inferred).

LIFE Master AJ: My "Problem of the Month" for May, 2007. (Please - do NOT post the solution!)

click for larger view

White: Kg1, Qd1, Bc4 & e3, Rb1 & e1; Pawns - d5, f2, g3, and h6. / Black: Kg8, Qb4, Ne8, Bd8, Rc8 & f5; Pawns - a6, d6, e5, g6, h7.

Sometimes in high-level chess, what is required is not a brilliant win; but tough, stubborn and obdurate defense. Here, Black must try and save a position ... which many of my students find difficult to hold.

I have a question: How far can pure hard work get you to, in chess? I mean, lets say someone has no talent whatsoever, but works incredibly hard. What level do you expect him to reach?

LIFE Master AJ: I'd say ... as long as you have at least a normal brain ... you should get at least to Expert, maybe even Master.

Many years ago, I met a fellow who said, "When I retire, I will devote myself completely to chess, and I will become a Master." I sort of laughed at the idea, as the concept of becoming a chess master ... for the very first time ... in your late fifties, or early sixties ... ran against conventional wisdom.

However, this chap proved me ... and all the other chess players wrong ... when he became a master. (He also wrote a book about the experience called, "Chess Master - at any age.")

Jun-16-07   Tactic101: That's good news for me! And other hopeful chess players. Already working quite hard (about an hour a normal school day, more or less; 2-3 hours on days off). For a school child, do you think this will work out? Thanks! :)

PS Just in passing, I don't believe its right that your page is locked, but, unfortunately, other members behavior on that page got out of hand and everyone was unfairly attacking you, without good reason and with virtually nothing constructive in mind. But don't take chessgames.com hard for this. Please.

LIFE Master AJ: Actually, I think that my page has just been unlocked.

But it was locked ... for probably close to a year, maybe more.

Some of this was at my own request, one person wanted to turn things into a personal vendetta, and also began to drop slurs on family members ... that was beyond my ability to tolerate it.
