 | | LIFE Master AJ: I am getting more e-mails from phones nowadays:
<< <"I played the Fischer game and towards the end spassky kept playing qg8/qh8 just back and forth what was the purpose of that">
Sent from my Windows Phone <<<>>> >> It was dated Tuesday; Feb. 21st, 2012. (10:24 AM)
This must be a new trend, the last six months, I have seen a TREMENDOUS increase in this type of communication. |
 |
Feb-23-12
 | | LIFE Master AJ: Tuesday morning, seven such, all sent from phones. |

 | | morfishine: <AJ> While I address <SS> feel free to solve the problems anytime you feel like it. They are getting tougher as we work through our respective books. He tripped me up with 'DownStares'...don't know how I missed that one. My favorite so far that he's sent over is 'Iceman'...really chilling finish. If you don't recall it, I'd be happy to send it over. |
 |
Feb-23-12
 | | morfishine: <AJ> Meant to add, what about a problem competition? We get a month or whatever to compose an original problem and let whoever decide the winner. Could be worthwhile from an originality perspective. I think I could compose a decent problem and/or puzzle |
 |
Feb-23-12
 | | LIFE Master AJ: I am all for a problem competition ... but who judges it? AND we have to set out what we are trying to accomplish at the start. ("Mate in X" or endgame or "White to move and win.") |
 |
Feb-23-12
 | | LIFE Master AJ: Post both problems (that you referred to) here, it cannot but help to make my forum better ... |
 |

 | | morfishine: <AJ> Here's 'Iceman':

 | | LIFE Master AJ: This one's too simple, I was thinking something else when I first saw it. 1...Rb1+; 2.Ke2, Ne1 (fork) looks to win material. |
 |
Feb-24-12
 | | LIFE Master AJ: Was that it ... or am I missing something here? |
 |
Feb-25-12
 | | morfishine: Good morning <AJ>! Yes, 'Iceman' is simple...Its one of my favorites, if for nothing else, the pattern. Here's a tougher one: I've spent about 20-minutes total and am getting closer, but still not there: 'Fine art of the impossible'

 | | LIFE Master AJ: <Morf> Your (second) problem ... (above). I had to set this up on my wooden peg set, the diagram was just too small for my old eyes ... (I probably need glasses). I did NOT move the pieces, just wrote down my thoughts ... you may want to check this with an engine, I have a vague feeling that I missed a few things ... maybe, maybe not. (I am still sure of the first move, though.) Its pretty simple, the first move (to me) is very obvious ... the capture on e5. HOWEVER ... it begins to branch out and I used close to 30 minutes ... click for larger view Any Player - A.O. Player
Round # 01; 25,02,2012.
[A.J.G.]
("The fine art of the impossible.")
Black to move and win.
1...Bxe5; 2.Qb1 ;
This is forced, I think.
[ The simple recapture on e5 does not work out too well for White ...
(Worse is: </=) 2.Nxe5? Qxe5;
We could stop here, Black is up a piece and two pawns. However, there is a matter of the pinned (Black) Knight on e4 ... 3.f3 Qd4+ 4.Kh1!? Nf2+! 5.Kh2 Nd3 6.Red1 Qe5+; " " and Black is winning easily. ] 2...Qb2; 3.Rxc6!?,
Call this pure desperation, but to simply swap off all the pieces is very bad. (I think.) [Much, much worse would be: <3.Qxb2?? Bxb2; (White is a piece down ... and the Q's are off the board as well.) ] 3...Qxb1 4.Rxg6+ Kh7 5.Rxb1 fxg6 6.Nxe5 Nd2 7.Rb2 Nxb3 8.Rxb3 b5; The second player has a relatively simple win.

I don't have time right now, later I will go over this with Fritz or Houdini ... and see how much I missed. Maybe I did NOT need to go this deep ... and the further that you go, the greater chance that you will miss something. By the way, if you really want to improve, you should do this. [I have done this for YEARS. Solve problems, and WRITE DOWN your solutions. (Sometimes I do OK, and other times I am so far off, it isn't even funny.) Many times when you check them, you will not believe what you missed or waht a good chess engine will find.] All of my advice is laid out on this web page ...

 | | morfishine: <AJ> Thanks for sending over the solution to 'Fine Art of the Impossible'...I too settled on <1...Bxe5> as best for Black but drifted in the continuation not playing the best for White; and you saw <2.Qb1> as best for white though <2.Qa2> is a candidate Good news, <CG> spared us a vote and awarded both <sevenseaman> and <LoveThatJoker> Rinus Awards! Well deserved for both! |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: Thanks, congrats to LTJ and <sevenseaman> ... both deserve their rewards. |

 | | morfishine: I'm a big believer in writing down solutions or more importantly, recalling what one is thinking when deciding on a move, then writing that down. In 'Training for the Tournament Player' by Mark Dvoretsky and Artur Yusupov, great emphasis is placed on writing. The connection: BRAIN - HAND + PENCIL = NOTES
is so valuable it can't even be measured. We are using our brain to recall and then using our hand to put those thoughts into words. A good analogy is watching a basketball game on TV or listening to the same game on the Radio. Its much more beneficial to simply listen to the game on the Radio. Why? The TV provides all the vivid colorful graphics. Net result is the imagination portion of our Brain is turned off since all that is being provided. In other words, all those graphics leaves us nothing to imagine. However, if we just listen to the game on the radio, we are forced to provide our own internal 'pictures' via imagination. The imaginative portion of our brain comes alive. Now I know what 'couch potato' really means: Lump of flesh with no imagination [ie: its been turned off] |

 | | playground player: <Life Master AJ> Delete all non-chess posts from forums? Whoa! Have you visited my forum lately? Following your prescription, my whole forum would be deleted. I mean, who wants to read anything I have to say about chess? The problem is not "non-chess posts." The problem is personalities. Realizing that the only way to do this is to insist on civility, I think my own forum has become, consequently, productive, thought-provoking, and interesting. I'm not trying to brag about it: whatever has been accomplished there is the work of a diverse group of kibitzers--<YouRang>, <achieve>, <OhioChessFan>, <cormier>, <Jessicafischerqueen>, <Deus Ex Alekhine>, and quite a few others. Without them, my forum is nothing. Within this group, we hardly ever agree about anything. We don't have to! Our purpose is to share our thoughts on religious and social issues, and hopefully to inspire independent thinking among our readers. I think we have all shown that this can be done without anybody getting nasty. Occasionally someone goes a bit over the top, but we've managed to deal with those incidents without involving CG management. Please don't encourage management to shut us down. |

Feb-26-12
 | | LIFE Master AJ: <playground player> You misread me.
I want them to shut down the trolls (nothing else) ... and I would NEVER encourage tampering with a personal forum ... unless it got just plain nasty. (There have been a number of forums that have been censored over the years. Links to nudity/porn or really filthy language.) Surely, you know I have this group of people. They follow me all over the site. ANYTIME I post ANYTHING, they try to bring an insult to bear. This is what I would like to see end. (You may copy this into that forum, if you so desire.) |

There are LAWS in place to prevent stalking and cyber-stalking ... and I plan on using those to put a PERMANENT end to the crap from the trolls. (One way or the other.) |

BTW: You probably have this book, but its a real good one: "Ten Most Common Mistakes in Chess" by Larry Evans...I just got it...Great positions from GM games with oversights that cost losses that should've been draws |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: I MIGHT have that one ... somewhere ... sitting on my desk is a Christmas gift from my friend, Stephen Davis. ("This Crazy World of Chess." Of course, its by IGM Larry Evans.) BTW, I don't think I am going to bother posting on the POTD anymore ... |
