May-03-09  Dionyseus: <kormier> <current position: potential mobility; white 97--black 98. >

How did you get those figures?

May-03-09  kormier: Hi <Dionyseus> on an empty board in one move: [a pawn is worth: 1 (or 2 if on it,s original square),a Kt;2,3,4,6 or 8,a B;7,9,11 or 13,a R always 14,the Q;21,23,25 or 27 and the K;3,5 or 8. Then add-up each individual single value to obtain a total amount of potential mobility, compare each side. There are other essential positional elements to take into account also. by.

  SoltanGris: Could you run 18...Re8?

14: May509 - Rybka 3,

Analysis by Rybka 3 :

1. = (-0.14): 18...Re8 19.Nf5
2. = (-0.14): 18...Na6 19.g4 Nb4 20.Nf5 Rxd1+ 21.Rxd1 Qc7 22.Qb1 Be6 23.Bd4 g6 24.Bxe5 Qxe5 25.Nd4 Bc4 26.Qc1 Re8 27.g5 Nh5 28.Nf3 Qb8 29.e3 Bd3 30.Ne1 Bf5 31.Qd2

After 21 ply, 18...Re8 is the equal of 18...Na6

  SoltanGris: That's a big change going from d=23 to d=24!

19. Bc1 seems a much better line for white.

Seems like white found a draw. What does it look like ar d=25?

could you check 20.Nc3 Na6 21.Bf4 more deeply please. I think white may be able to get a good endgame. Black may have better then 20...Na6.

May-07-09  whatthefat: Hi <RandomVisitor>,

If you happen to get any free time, I'd be fascinated to see a move-by-move Rybka analysis of this game:

Kasparov vs Deep Blue, 1997

Kasparov's play is deep enough to outwit Deep Blue, and I think it would be extremely interesting to see how the evaluations of Rybka evolve across the game.

  RandomVisitor: <blue wave>After 18.Nf3 Rxd1 19.Nxd1 Bc7 <20.Nc3> the computer likes 20...h6 or 20...g6, scoring roughly -0.40/17.

In any case, after 18.Nf3, 18...Rxd1 19.Nxd1 is virtually forced, and this will allow us some time to choose between 19...Bc7 and 19...Bd6 - two very good moves.

  SoltanGris: RV, It took my dual core computer ten hours to calculate 3 billion nodes. One of your computers calculated 2.1 billion nodes in 5:23. I calculated from a position where Re8 was already made, so my calculation is one half move deeper at 23 and 24 ply, I believe.

1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 e6 5. g3 dxc4 6. Bg2 Nbd7 7. a4 Bb4 8. O-O O-O 9. Qc2 a5 10. Rd1 Qe7 11. Na2 Bd6 12. Qxc4 e5 13. Qc2 exd4 14. Nxd4 Nc5 15. Nc3 Rd8 16. Rb1 Bc7 17. h3 Be5 18. Be3 Re8

19.Bc1 h6 20.e4 Bc7 21.Re1 Bd7 22.e5 Rad8 23.f4 Nh5 24.Kh2 = (0.00) Depth: 24 10:00:44 2906mN

My analysis starts with having Re8 already made. My result is the same as yours. The score fell from -0.13 at depth 21 to 0.00 at depths 22, 23, and 24.

  RandomVisitor: <SoltanGris>Thanks for that. I have one of my machines looking at the Re8 line now in the hopes that it will discover something. I will post something late this evening.
