If your page is permanent, I will happily post a link to it on my page. (I think what the computer has to say is VERY important! BTW, I used to use Mephisto to analyze games, that was the first table-top unit to go over 2200, and I used it to help me analyze games. This was before PC programs got halfway decent.)

So I have been doing computer assisted analysis for like 20-30 years, the first time I tried it was with a Fidelity unit, I think it had a 2000+ rating.

kwid: Hi, remember my claim to refute the Traxler counter gambit in the 2 knights defence with Bxf7? Your draw line against Nxf7 as posted at your site, inspired me to show that black can not give a pawn plus accept a poor king position and survive.

I did not post my findings as of yet because I am still not quite sure that engines can not use the blacks advantage in development to convert it into a drawn endgame.

I will keep looking for a winning line just a little longer.

As to the Akobian game, have you looked at the Bg6 Hudini's main line? It seems to lead into a very solid position for black.

Your R4.1 line with Nb3 looks good for us.

  truefriends: <13...f5 14. Bd3 O-O 15. Kh1 Qe8 16. Rg1 Qf7 17. Nf3 Be7 18. g5>

Seems like after <14... 0-0> all white moves (Kh1;Rg1;Nf3) are to prepare the g4-g5 push. So i think we should look for improvements on move 15 if we don't like the <18.g5>-push.

Could you do a run after <14... 0-0>? Many thanks in advance!

Seems like you have every move except this one.:-)

blue wave: RV ~ I'm at work. :-(

But maybe you can look at <Dan's> refutation to your d=33 line. (well maybe not refutation).

Anyway he advocates <17...Bh7>.

<1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5.Be2 Nd7 6.O-O Bg6 7.a4 Ne7 8.a5 Nf5 9.c3 h6 10.Nbd2 Be7 11.g4 Nh4 12.Nxh4 Bxh4 13.f4 f5 14.Kh1 fxg4 15.Bxg4 Nf8 16.a6 b6 17.Rg1 <Bh7> 18.Bh5+ g6 19.Be2 Be7 20.Nf3 Kd7>

Maybe we can have Rybka line from here?

It looks like it might be too late for <14...Kh1>. Oh well.

Thanks in advance.

RandomVisitor: <blue wave>My run at that line was scoring +0.86 or so, but things get complicated in semi-closed positions.

I think that we have explored 14.Kh1 to the extent we could, and chessgames members have voted....

blue wave: <RV> Yes. Fair enough. Thanks RV. I'm happy enough with 14.Bd3.

blue wave: I think <14.Bd3 0-0 15.Qc2> is worth a closer look. Have been looking tonight. Seems interesting forcing <...Qe8> and <...Kh7> for black. Any way. Goodnight.

blue wave: Sometimes I wonder if all the World voters know about your Rybka work here? Maybe you should post your work to the main page every so often like in the last thematic challenge game?

Just a thought.

  lost in space: hello <RV>,

No influenced from your analyzes I found (with shredder) the following line (by sliding:

14. Bd3 (0-0?!) 14...0-0 15. Kh1 Qe8 (Rf7?!) 16. Rg1 Qf7 17. Nf3 Bd8 (you have Be7) 18. g5?! (Checking 18. Qc2 now) hxg5 19. Nxg5 Bh5 20. Qf1 Bxg5 21. Rxg5 g6 22. b3 Kg7 23. Ba3 Rh8 24. Rg3 (you have Qg2) Bg4 25. c4 Rh6 26. Ra2 Rah8 with +1,06

click for larger view

But my human evaluation is that Black is fine. Fortress and it is very hard to crack that nut. What do you think about this position?

  RandomVisitor: <lost in space>I have

[+0.55] d=18 27.Kg1 Rh3 28.Rag2 dxc4 29.bxc4 c5 30.Qf2 a6 31.Bf1 R3h6 32.Qb2 Bh3 33.dxc5 Bxg2 34.Bxg2 Rh4 35.Bxb7 Rxf4 36.c6 Nb8 37.Qb4 Rg4 38.Rxg4 fxg4 39.Qd6

Rybka finds a way to crack open the position.

My personal opinion is that a computer "evaluation" represents the size of the mistake that the side with the advantage can make which would result in an even position.

This would explain why fortress-type positions (with no clear progress towards checkmate) can be scored highly by the machine. It is looking at piece mobility, global mobility, constraints, "real estate" controlled, good moves available, etc.
