 | | Shams: <SamAtoms1980> Bring back the Muon cloud! I don't know enough about golf or tennis to say which format might be a better template; both sports have the advantage over chess in that major tournaments routinely host over a hundred players. Even with the Tata A/B/C group splits, we're looking at only 40 or so players. Let's start by dumping the WCC; after that we can work out further details. Have you read "The Education of Henry Adams", from the same family as your namesake? |

| May-07-12 | | SamAtoms1980: <Have you read "The Education of Henry Adams", from the same family as your namesake?> No, but it seems like I, and countless others like me, are going through a very similar thing. But at least I've managed to adapt in terms of my ability to make use of Wikipedia. Got to love Wikipedia; it's like Cliff Notes for the entire universe. The muon cloud will return when I can afford a muon accelerator (read: win a premium subscription during Christmas, or get an epiphany and make a string of clairvoyant bookie bets). On the other hand, I might just buy one if <chessgames.com> will ever broadcast during my waking hours.... |

| May-07-12 | | King Death: <Shams> Out of curiosity I read the start of <discojew's> post on his page, I'm disappointed that <AJ> trotted out the old cheating accusations after losing another game online. What he doesn't get is that when he uses his censorship powers on his page that way that it makes him look really bad. As for me I wouldn't waste my time posting on his page if he didn't have me on ignore because he's irrelevant, just like he always has been. |

 | | perfidious: <Shams: ....As I have previously noted, after some 15 years as an e4 player I have recently been playing 1.Nf3 with an eye towards the Reti or Catalan. I am reasonably happy with the positions I'm getting, but 1...c5 is annoying me. ....The alternative to 2.e4 with a Sicilian seems to be playing the symmetrical English, either hoping Black goes in for 2.c4 Nf6 3.Nc3 d5 4. cd Nxd5 4.e4 Nb4 5.Bc4 Nd3+ 6.Ke2 etc, a position I believe in though I have no experience in it, or hoping Black plays an early ...d5 imbalancing and I can find my way in those positions...> The line you're likely to face is actually 5.Bc4 Be6 6.Bxe6 Nd3+ 7.Kf1 Nf4+ 8.Kf1 fxe6, which was played in Seirawan-Peters, 1981 US Championship, amongst other games. http://www.365chess.com/search_resu... <And all the time the spectre of 1.Nf3 c5 2.c4 Nf6 3.Nc3 Nc6 with a four knights variation hangs over my head. Is it as stodgy as it looks? I'm hoping I can just leave the Sicilian behind, but I need to get positions with some life in them....> One formation you can wind up with here is an Accelerated Dragon Sicilian, which is the most testing-I had a number of these when I played 1.c4 because even expert level opponents didn't understand the transpositional possibilities inherent in the English.
As an aside, don't bother with Wikipedia on this for any reason-that article needs to simply be scrapped. If I had time and enough decent sources to hand, I'd do it. In your line after 3....Nc6, there's 4.g3 or 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nxd4 e6, the latter of which is anything but stodgy after 6.g3. This line was topical in the late 1970s and very sharp, despite its appearance. Of course, if Black plays 5....g6, after 6.e4 we're in the Maroczy Bind. Hope this clarifies things a little-if you've any questions, do ask. |

 | | Shams: <IptF> I can sure see why he is dragging his feet in his White game. Any reason you didn't play 6...Qa5+ there by the way? Thought you were gonna trade queens in your White game. I'm not sure what's happening in either one of my games, but looking at your boards we're in very good shape for the match, unless I implode. |
 |
| Aug-08-12 | | I play the Fred: <6...Qa5+> Uh, er, that is... The stupid thing is, I've won a zillion games on FICS with that very Q check hitting e5. <Q trade with white> I felt that trading queens, although I am a pawn up, allows him a bit breather. Right now, he's got to worry about the pawn deficit AND the queen en prise. A less charitable interpretation of my refusal to trade queens is that I'm a crazy old chess hoarder, unwilling to let go of even the most worthless trinket among the scores of kitchy, useless, junky souvenir paraphernalia strewn about the floor amongst the Schlitz Tall Boys, empty pork rind bags, and sickly kittens. Even if selling off my <XFL> trucker hat will allow me to afford Parvo vaccine for poor little <Sgt. Whiskers>, I still won't do it. I prefer the former characterization for some reason. |
