Chessgames Challenge: Team White vs Team Black, 2012

Regarding a post made on the chessgames.com chessforum Aug 2011: < kutztown46: Here is an idea for your consideration. ... What if a certain opening was selected (say the Benoni)? The first few moves of the game (characteristic of the opening system chosen) would be "forced" and the game would start at the end of the forced series of moves. The twist is, instead of randomly assigning participants to one of the teams, allow participants to choose which side they want to play on. Computer use could be allowed.>

We believe this to be a very good idea. This account is created for discussion about the upcoming challenge, dubbed the <Chessgames Thematic Challenge.>

SCHEDULE: Voting will close on April 21st at 11:59 pm (USA/Eastern). The winner will be announced shortly after the voting closes. The game will begin at noon, April 25th.

MORE INFO: For rules and to cast your vote, please see our Thematic Challenge Voting Page.

blue wave: I've changed my vote. Pulling out of a Nc3 Modern Benoni. Hard to see how black could ever get more then a draw in a computer assisted match. And even that would be a good result I think.

I've opted for a Benko as black instead.

Apr-17-12  SamAtoms1980: On second thought, this isn't the place for a Najdorf, or even the Dragon Variation. A more exciting variety would be something I have called the "Erin Dragon", in which White plays <1.f4> d5 2.Nf3, with the plan of 3.e3, 4.b3, 5.Bb2, etc. Like the Classical Dragon, but rotated 180 degrees, where White opens with a risky sequence but has the first move for it.

benjinathan: Sarcastic comment: the thing that is so great about this forum is that we get the chance to rehash the same arguments that have arisen in at least 2 of the games I have been involved in. It is curious that a chaleenge which was spawned to deal with those arguments leads to a repetition of them.

Deja vu all over again:

<Aug-17-11
Akobian vs The World, 2011
AylerKupp: <<benjinathan>: Team White vs Team Black Benoni grudge match/throw down on the horizon?> An excellent idea, I would support that. The anti-Benoni players would be on Team White and the pro-Benoni players would be on Team Black. That wouldn't settle anything (after all, it wouldonly be one game) but it certainly would be entertaining.

And the same could apply to any opening or lines whose merits are in question. <chessgames.com>, hopefully you're taking notice.

In fact, that sounds more interesting than the current game against V.Akobian. Maybe we should abandon this game by voting 1-0 and ask chessgames.com to set up the Benoni game instead. I haven't seen such controversy since the Peter Zhdanov affair early in The World vs. N. Pogonina game. Nah, DEFINITELY just kidding again.>

AylerKupp: <benjinathan> I'm not surprised that we're rehashing many of the same arguments that have arisen in at least 2 of the previous games. That's the mark of an unresolved argument and, if ever an argument was unresolved, the Benoni sucks/Benoni doesn't suck and Taimanov is to be avoided/Taimanov can be allowed arguments are two of them. And, unfortunately, they will be unresolved even if we were to play a Benoni/Taimanov attack in this game since, regardless of how much the winners would like it to be so, one game is not likely to fully resolve the argument. But it sure will be fun to try!

AylerKupp: <srgntshultz> Yup, guilty as charged. And it reminds me of the Judy Collins song: Send in the clowns / Don't bother, they're here.

Then again, I know nothing.

Thematic Challenge: <So if we don't vote for a certain opening, but it happens to win, we can join, but we are assigned to a random team, right?> Exactly.

The intention here is simple: if you prefer to play a certain side of an opening, vote that way. For example suppose you regard the white side of the Halloween Attack as unsound. In that case, simply vote for the BLACK side, and not the white side. That way, should the Halloween attack ends up being the winning opening, you'll find yourself playing Black.

Thematic Challenge: I put the latest update in the profile comments at the top of the page. The Benko and the Benoni are still neck and neck.

Interestingly, the Opening Explorer Opening of the Day is that Taimanov variation which seems to be the crux of the Benoni debate. That wasn't planned, just a coincidence.

AylerKupp: <Thematic Challenge> Thanks for putting the latest voting update in the profile comments, it makes them easier to see. One minor request is that you include the date and time of the update so those that are still voting or changing their vote can see how recent the update is.

cro777: According to ONLINE CHESS DICTIONARY

THERAPEUTIC CHALLENGE is a specific type of thematic chess game in which both Team White and Team Black use humor as a primary element. Humor is the best medicine unless you're playing Taimanov in the Benoni Defence.

Machado: I congratulate Chessgames for implementing this great idea. I like the opening choices and the selection system. This promise to be a more interesting game, avoiding at least part of the boring discussions in the beginning. In standard computer assisted games people are usually afraid of taking risks, so they pick the more solid and frequently played choices.
