| jessicafischerqueen: HAHAAH <Ray Mears> once survived 8 days in the bush eating only bear scat. FACT: <Ella Fitzgerald> was not actually a bear, but she was sometimes mistaken for one in poor lighting. |

| Thorski: <Pawnage><Have you heard Hilary Hahn's rendition? It's slow and beautiful, my favorite interpretation.> I have. She's supremely talented. You should listen to Julia Fischer's version, too. Its tenderness is similar to Hahn's, yet very energetic. Also very modern: the way she teases the tempo. I'm honestly not sure Bach would approve. I actually uploaded it to youtube a while ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9x0...
I prefer a FLAC-file over youtube clips, but it's not so bad. If you have any other recommendations (not necessarily the Chaconne), I'd love to hear them! |

| Pawnage: Wow, that was very good as well. Now I'm not sure which I like more... As fas as recommendation, just one more you may have heard: Ach Bleib Bei Uns Herr Jesu Christ is great on organ, but I think this is simply superb: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9nH...
Douglas Adams' favorite piece o' music. |

| Thorski: Beautiful. I love Bach. His music lies closer to my heart than that of any other composer. I'm a dabbling pianist (emphasis on dabbling), and really enjoy Bach's keyboard music. The Goldberg Vars are astonishing. The Well-Tempered Clavier and Partitas are full of gems. Here's a favorite clip of mine, featuring Glenn Gould in his element (I consider him the Fischer of Bach interpretors): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qB76... Such blistering polyphony. Shivers, every time.
For the Goldbergs, my favs are Andras Schiff and Glenn Gould (1955). |

| YouRang: Hey, I remember Hilbert Space from Applied Mathematics in college! That was the last time I ever had to think about it, so I don't remember much, except that it was a "function space", and that I thought it was kind of a cool concept. :-) |

| jessicafischerqueen: yo yo <Big Thor> I hope you're not going to be offline for six months or something cuz I have a rare serious music question I want to ask you. Although I'm likely to ask it in the most facetious manner possible. I will email you as well to see if you are around.
Finally, I suggest you take this facetiousness test to improve your knowledge and understanding of facetiousness: http://www.facetious_fun.org |

| jessicafischerqueen: <Big Thor>
Ok I'm happy you are "hear"- I need your opinion on these TOP SECRET <Aalborg Ambient Soundtracks> that have been cruising around youtube picking up an extremely diverse collection of devoted listeners. I love them- they are ultra simple, perhaps, with tons of repetition- but I find them soulful and mesmerizing. There are tons of them posted and I've been listening to them obssessively, especially the long playlists I've made of them before I go to sleep. They make for "interesting dreams" to say the least. Here are my two favorites:
"The Living Hills" (makes me think of your people v the Romans) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T1G... "Awaken the Elves" (not as gay as the title suggests- and that's a mute Nina Simone in the video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PT2... Now, this music is selling like hotcakes on Amazon, i-tunes, e-tunes, videoswap, etc. Here is my favorite youtube comment about this phenomenon: "How is it that this music attracts such a wide variety of different kinds of retards?" Now the mystery deepens. There is NOT ONE WORD on the internet that might reveal who the musicians are or even what the record company is. I have questions three:
A- Do you think this music is any good?
B- Do you think it's possible that this music is entirely computer generated? By that, I mean that the composer(s) are only using synthesizeres to make all of the sounds. No "real" instruments. C- PSYCHE! "C" is not a question. I believe this music is entirely computer generated, and that is the main reason for the TOP SECRET SECRECY. D- PSYCHE! There really were three questions after all. However, I've decided NOT to ask you the third question. Thank you. |

Inspired, and emboldened, by your crazed decision to spend 20,000 dollars on the best <Bausch and Lomb> speakers known to humanity-- I went on a shopping spree downtown yesterday and shelled out an obscene amount of money for a pair of <BOSE> speakers for my Labdog. I've never been so happy with a purchase in my life-
Well Ok not since I managed to find, and promptly buy, one of the shotgun pellets they dug out of <Harry Whittington's> face on E-Bay. |

 |
| Thorski: A) Yeah, I do like it. I'm a big fan of minimalist composer Philip Glass (did the sountrack for The Hours, his most famous work popularly). His solo piano works are also very interesting. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgjb... The Aalborg Fantasy stuff reminds me of his Koyaanisqatsi, and Einstein On the Beach, but with a freer structure/more ambient Examples:
Koyaanisqatsi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPnV...
Einstein On the Beach
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmX_...
B) I don't think it's purely synthesized. There's sampling, to be sure, but much of the sound was initially produced by instruments. Take my digital Yamaha, for instance, which is 100% electronic, sounds great, but is using layers of sampled sound from Yamaha's top concert grand. |

 |
| Thorski: You may like Ludovico Einaudi. His stuff is a little softer than Glass'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTkz... |

| jessicafischerqueen: Ah Ok thanks for taking the time <Big Thor>. I'm also a giant <Glass fan> and I've been all over the <Koyanissskatza> <Pocahantiskatzka> <Neuralgiakaqstquit> trilogy and <Einstein's day off> for years in fact. I'm also a huge fan of <Michael Nyman's> soundtracks for Peter Greenaway films- His music for <The Draughtsman's Contract> is my favorite- have you heard it? Here is Michael directing a portion of this masterpiece live- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfP0... |

| jessicafischerqueen: Heh I got sidetracked listening to "Awaken the Elves" full blast on my new BOSE speakers (now with actual bass!). I hope you're not jealous of my new speakers.
You're not jealous are you?
I don't want you to feel jealous. |

 |
| Thorski: Congrats on your speaker purchase. My B&Ws are not the $20,000 ones. =) They were a great investment though. But there's no need to spend thousands on speakers. Audiophile listening can be had cheaply by investing in a set of top-end headphones. A pair of reference cans would cost you around $500, and would outperform speaker systems costing ten times that. Btw, been checking out the other stuff from the AFS. Very diverse! Thanks for the tip. |
