Viewer Deluxe: Thanks, <Open Defence>. That’s very refreshing to know. It didn’t make much sense from the very beginning but most of the hard-to-find bugs don’t. I posted a lengthy “troubleshooting guide” to <malformed URL exception> here chessgames.com chessforum. The ideas can also be used for solving other kinds of troubles.

From what you’re telling me it sounds like your specific issue is indeed inside the page’s HTML and the URL does contain some kind of hidden/strange (or maybe Unicode) character that all other browsers ignore. You can still try an alternative browser (FF?) just for the record. I’m afraid, more systematic approach is only possible if CG.com wants to proceed with it.

Open Defence: yeah, though I hate Fire Fox... but one thing how come the problem is only here at chessgames.com ? (though no other web site uses the viewer like this as far as I know)

Viewer Deluxe: <OD>, The point is that if you don’t have the problem with FF you’d know for sure that Safari is contributing to it to happen. I’m not recommending you to switch browsers, only a way of knowing more about your problem.

Viewer Deluxe: For the record, the re-transmitting application for the “Grand Prix” got even better in the last few days. The back-end side of the refresh mechanism should feel smoother and scale much better under load. The reason I started this whole thing is to compliment the shortcomings of the original broadcasting method. I’ve always been annoyed by its limitations, especially that I couldn’t get a FEN or PGN out of it. Doing it in a real time was an extra challenge.

Enjoy the broadcast at http://chesstuff.blogspot.com/2009/...

Sneaky: Here's some information for FireFox users.

I was being driven positively batty getting my friend's computer to show Chessgames without being buggy (esp. regarding the Java viewer, but not just that) and I made a discovery.

In FireFox there are options called "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out" under the "View" menu. There is also a switch called "Zoom text only". The idea is that FireFox can reformat the page for people with exceptionally small or big monitors so that web pages look more normal.

Here's my conclusion: If you choose "Zoom Out" and you do NOT have "Zoom text only" mode selected, you are really taking your chances. FireFox will try to zoom all sorts of page elements that do not like being resized including (you guessed it) the Chess Viewer Deluxe applet.

This can cause parts of the applet to be clipped off, much like some other bugs recently being discussed here. (One symptom, two possible causes. A headache ain't it?)

Ergo: if you are being bothered by the weird "clipping" type bugs (e.g. missing the rightmost and bottommost pixels of the viewer applet) and you are using FireFox, you should investigate your settings with regards to that Zooming feature.

I hope this helps somebody out there, because it took me hours to figure out! Best wishes, Sneaky

Viewer Deluxe: Excellent piece of info, <Sneaky> It seems that not even the mighty FF is able to handle such feature properly. Frankly, I think that zoom in/out functionality needs to be supported by the JRE (or the plug-in) in first place. Similar to the way we have it in Flash player. Otherwise there’s little magic that the browser could do alone to solve it.

Thanks

biglo: I used the free ChessDB software and used its log to note what line from the ZIP file was causing a problem. Then I loaded the PGN still within the ZIP file into the free metapad and viewed the appropriate line causing the problem. On several occasions I was unsure what actually was the problem. I believe there may be a few more games causing problems as the 0000-1899 file kept falling over when I tried to load it through ChessDB. I believe it might be due to characters like the em Dash being used. I loaded the file through metapad or Word (can't remember which) and saved it in a Dos txt format and got told that the em Dash was a problem. There are reputedly 9 em dashes in the ZIP file but I've not reviewed all the games.

I'll have a closer look at those annotation problems later after I get my evening tea.

  Viewer Deluxe: OK, <biglo>
Now, I can see what you’ve been doing.
So, you did try loading the whole CG database.
Apparently the PGN parser from ChessDB isn’t bad at all and most of the complaints are about real issues that need fixing. Posting the logs or the PGNs here (on CG forums) isn’t going to help because of the various “Kibitzing Tricks”.

My point to you is the following. I looked very carefully through all of your “Annotation Problem - 3rd Party Software” type of problems and the next three are bogus.

Breyer vs K Havasi, 1918
Hort vs A Rodriguez, 1987
R Kempinski vs Epishin, 2001

Try loading them in different chess software and you will, hopefully, see that there’s nothing wrong with the PGNs. Probably, one source of confusion is the <lack of a delimiter> between the move and annotations. The PGN standard clearly specifies that no such delimiter is required. That’s a bug in the parser you were using. Another possible confusion comes from the fact that <more than one annotation> follows a move. Little known but that’s perfectly allowed by the PGN standard. That’s another bug. In case of CVD, double-annotations are not only supported and presented properly (see move 140…Bd8 in the third game) but also preserved during export (Copy Game).

To conclude, you did a great job but we might be able to get even better (or more?) results if we could do the same using a better PGN parser.

Viewer Deluxe: I’m glad you liked it, <achieve>

It’s still the same world of chess but I agree that the live relays on my blog have a flavor of their own. I never liked the lack of features in the official live broadcasts not to mention their varying performances. One of my goals was to make my live relays more reliable and less vulnerable to server breakdowns.

Thanks for your feedback, though. That’s the only way I’d know how things look at your side.

  PinnedPiece: Suggestion for Chess960 games:

* Use ECO=960

* If ECO=960, skip position check of kings and rooks prior to castle

* Other permissions verified as per usual (unmoved, unattacked, etc)

* for backward tracking, consult original FEN rather than built-in start position for how to undo a castle

* Seems like this wouldn't take more than 1-2 hours of recoding/testing.

*Result: with a small change to each PGN (sdding ECO=960) Fischer Random games can be played with the Deluxe Viewer.

.

Viewer Deluxe: I hate to disappoint you, <PinnedPiece>, but that’s hardly a solution. Let’s try to imagine that your suggestion works and you are able to represent any Chess960 game with it.

* How are you going to convince the whole world to use your approach?

IMO, what we need is a standard way of sharing Chess960 games that <everybody> agrees on and everybody is going to use in the future. After that we can use any Chess960 viewer to show the games. Moreover we already have the PGN to start from.

* How hard is this task?
* Why hasn’t this issue been resolved for so many years?

You may be right about one thing, though.
It seems that a lot of effort is wasted trying to prove how easy the solution is. I’ve even read suggestions that show little understanding of the basic PGN principles.

If I’m to produce a quick (and easy to do) idea of mine I’d say:

* Let’s drop the ridiculous <which-game-is-superior> contest and forget about the artificial compatibility.

More of my thoughts can be found chessgames.com chessforum and Fischerandom Chess

PinnedPiece: My suggestion was for a very localized patch, applying only to CG.com and the castling rules in effect here...

Adding the ECO=960 edit step before pasting would have to be done manually in each and every PGN case, but would at least make the viewer usable in this arena anyway.

I understand--now--that anything you undertake, you would want it to be "ANSI-approved" if not globally accepted. Definitely a legitimate desire.

No matter. My experience with this game online is extremely limited (as in, 1 game). Probably even more limited in future!
