Zahir Ahmadov, Baku, Azerbaijan. I used to spend more time on this web site some years ago mostly because I found cg.com as a great resource from where I could learn a lot of chess. Then, this web site became part of my life as I found very good friends through it (the title of the forum is no co-incidence). It has always been very nice to communicate with these friends, among whom I would name <Switch>, <brankat>, <kuda>, <tarlan>, <lostemperor> etc. I think virtual friendship is missing something important in human communication, which encouraged me to meet some of these people in real life, both in Azerbaijan and overseas.

Currently, I am having time constraints to spend time on this forum, but my recent extension of premium membership encourages me to take measures to be present here more frequently. Lets see if this will be possible in the near future.

ahmadov: Yes, that is true. Sometimes I lose because I am too optimistic about positions that look tempting, but do not give much play, the one we have just discussed.

ahmadov: <SwhingQuylthulg> You might find me a bit too conservative, but i am in favour of having Ramadan fasting being above everything. Even though I have not had a chance to look through the article carefully.

Meanwhile, we are more concentrated on Eurovision here. DO you follow it?

Well, yes and no. It's in the news but it's not a major topic and I probably won't watch the finals. Media interest this year has been quite low, though the Russian entry has been noted. I can't recall less attention ever being paid to our own entry, likely for two reasons: the song was in Swedish and nobody thought for 2 seconds we might qualify for the final (we didn't).

At least I do know the contest's held in Azerbaijan :) And I think I actually heard your entry once, though I didn't realize it at the time...

Good luck for the final!

ahmadov: Thanks for your wishes. However, Baku was not successful for the bid for 2020 Olympic Games host city and lost it a couple of days ago.

By the way, recently I had some interest in athletism, which is I believe also your field of attraction. I met Colin Jackson, British athlet, in Baku a month or so ago. Apparently, he is somebody who has worldwide recognition as a great sportsman.

ahmadov: <SwitchingQuylthulg: <ahmadov> Here's a little puzzle for you :)> In that latest puzzle, I think White needs one extra move in order to win if it has any chance for that. This could be for instance, 1.Kd4 Kd7 2.Ke5 and here if 2...Ke7 then 3.Kd5 makes the Black to move in the position you provided. Or if 2...Kd8 then 3.d6 is winning for White in my opinion. If it is correct then I am really very proud of finding it quickly, even though there are not many other lines in this puzzle.

ahmadov: Here is a game I won on gameknot against a strong opponent: ahmadov (1675) vs. spepo (1924)
1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 exd5 4. Nf3 Be7 5. Bd3 Nf6 6. O-O O-O 7. Bg5 h6 8. Bh4 c6 9. Re1 Be6 10. Nbd2 Nbd7 11. c4 dxc4 12. Nxc4 Nd5 13. Bxe7 Qxe7

ahmadov: Now, here comes my sacrifice:
22. Nxf7 Kxf7 23. Qh5+ g6 24. Qxh6 Bf5 25. Ne5+ Kg8 26. g4 Rxd4 27. gxf5 Rxf5 28. Qe3 Rdf4 29. Nd3 Rg4+ 30. Kf1 Nd5 31. Qe6+ Kg7 32. Ne5 Rxf2+ 33. Kxf2 Qb6

This is a trick by Black but I do not take the bait and play 34.Kf3

  ahmadov: 34...Rf4+ 35. Kg2 Rf6 36. Qd7+ Kg8 37. Ng4 Qxb2+ 38. Kh1 Rf8 39. Qe6+ Kg7 40. Qe5+ Qxe5 41. Rxe5 Rf4

And then the rest is not very difficult:

42. Ne3 Nxe3 43. Rxe3 Kf6 44. Rb3 Ra4 45. Rxb7 Rxa2 46. Rxc6+ Kg5 47. Rc1 a5 48. Rbb1 Kh4 49. Ra1 Rb2 50. Rxa5 g5 51. Rg1 g4 52. Ra8 Rb4 53. Rh8+ Kg5 54. h3

And after playing many moves in a lost position, Black resigns.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <ahmadov> I'm getting a bit jealous of you... it's not enough for you to meet great chess players, now you're meeting great athletes as well ;-) Colin Jackson still has the world record in the indoor 60m hurdles!

Any idea why Ramil Guliyev moved to Turkey?

It would have been a shock if Baku got the Olympics... up there with Finland winning this year's Eurovision ;-) Were you one of the bid leaders? ;-)

I'm not sure I understand your solution as there seem to be some typos in it. (2.Ke5 and 3.d6 aren't possible as there's a pawn on e5, not d5.) If you meant 2.Ke4 then Black just plays 2...Ke6 (and indeed, why wouldn't he just play 1...Ke6?)

ahmadov: Actually, I met Jackson at a sports event which was organized by a local NGO headed by a good friend of mine. There, I also met David Davis who is a prominent sports journalist and a football figure.

Ramil Guliyev's motives to move to Turkey are clear. I think he believes he can get better prominence and career by representing Turkey, life is much better in that country (not only economic one but also social and political ones). These are my guesses but I have not read his position on this change though. I heard the government did not welcome his decision. Please, note that he is not that popular in this country, mostly because we are generally not good at athletism.

But then I think your question about 1...Ke6 is also valid. I will come back to that later...

ahmadov: <It would have been a shock if Baku got the Olympics... up there with Finland winning this year's Eurovision ;-) Were you one of the bid leaders? ;-)> However, the government here is quite determined about that. They failed for Olympic Games host bid for 2016, but this did not discourage them from applying this time. I guess they will manage to get it once as Finland can win the Eurovision song contest with a Swedish song :-)

Yup, he's not eligible to represent Turkey internationally yet because of Azeri reluctance to let him go.

I would not to classify myself as one of those very responsible users on this web site. The only reason for your quick posts could be that you are more comfortable with writing in English than me.

Also, I do not think <brankat> spams. Just remember his great quotes... by some great personalities posted on his and others forums. They are indeed very interesting.

ahmadov: I was hesitating to extend my premium membership due to seldom attendance of this forum for the last two or three years, but still decided to extend it for another two years.

So, dear friends and non-friends, this forum is still open for all of you to post interesting posts on various topics.

This also means I really want to return to more active participation and am looking forward to doing so soon.
