 | | suenteus po 147: <mindmaster> The admins have been looking into constructing a separate, but functional "kibitzer database" for a while now. Like you, I have hundreds of games (3 or 4 actually good!) that I could upload if I knew they would not be disseminated amongst the games of the truly great players. It's one of those long-term proects they are continually working on, I think. <chessgames.com> Happy birthday! You guys have created my favorite chess website ever! |

 | | technical draw: <suenteus po 147> I have 1737 games archived at QA. Some of them are masterpieces (mainly the ones I lose) No, really I have some good games there and I'll have to go through them all so I can upload some if CC.G decides it's a good idea.
The problem is that some may think that a fool's mate is a great game.....TD |

For a seven-years-old youngster you made a huge impact on the Web-based chess community. We can never thank you enough. Many happy returns of the day!

 | | suenteus po 147: <chessgames.com> I'm about to submit a PGN via email for the 27th USSR Championship played in Leningrad and won by Korchnoi in 1960. There are 43 games from that tournament missing from the database, including games by Spassky, Petrosian, Geller, and Polugaevsky (!) which I know is hard to believe but I have confirmed it. Anyway, before I send the PGN and it is uploaded, this game Spassky vs Sacharov, 1960 must be fixed so that black is set as Yuri Nikolaevich Sakharov otherwise it will create a duplicate game when the PGN is uploaded. Once that's correct, if I'm right, no other duplicates will be created by the PGN when it's uploaded. Many thanks! |

 | | Robin01: <chessgames.com>Is there a way to search for a game, let's say, that started with 10 knight moves? |
 |
Dec-10-08
 | | chessgames.com: <All> We thank you all for your kind words. Here's to the next 7! <Robin01: Is there a way to search for a game, let's say, that started with 10 knight moves?> None that we can think of, except for probing the Opening Explorer and mapping out the maze of starting knight moves. <technical draw> <Is there anyway I can switch the clues screen to show the newest on top?> No. <suenteus po 147> Thanks for your contributions. Thanks also for the warning about Sacharov, but keep in mind that errors with alternate player name spelling work themselves out over time. After every big upload we end up with a few duplicated players, which then get folded into the main player records. In the process, we learn more alternate spellings to make future uploads work better. (In the future we plan on using that data to help the search engine identify player names, as well.) <Benzol> We haven't forgotten about you; thanks for your patience. |

 | | amadeus: Happy belated birthday, <CG>. A couple of gifts: Here you can download all 45! games from Najdorf's blind simul (1947): http://www.hiperchess.com.br/downlo... In that site I've found also a link to a very interesting one, with pgn from all Brazilian National Championships since 1927: http://www.brasilbase.pro.br/b.htm They have pan-american competitions and youth world championships too. A very good site. |

 | | Viewer Deluxe: Hi, <CG>
Most of the games in Israeli Championship 2008 for the first three rounds have “Budapest HUM” as their site (in the PGN). Later rounds have the correct “Haifa ISR”.
Is there a reason for that? I’m not sure if that might affect the search function (or maybe in the future). |
 |
Dec-11-08
 | | chessgames.com: <Viewer Deluxe> The official site must have had screwy PGN for the first few rounds then they corrected it. We'll see if we can correct our PGN. Those high-bit characters are worrisome. <amadeus> Thanks for those links. |
 |
Dec-12-08
 | | Viewer Deluxe: Oh, the official site does seem quite messy. For example, this game M Rodshtein vs I Caspi, 2008 of Round 3. If we go to the official site http://www.madatech.org.il/chess/Ro... and select "Rodshtein,M - Caspi,I" game we can see that the game ended on move 29...Bh6. In fact, that move wasn't even played and the game lasted 39 moves. |

 | | YouRang: Is it just me, or is the subtext associated with the Pearl Spring Chess Tournament (Nanjing, China) on the home page sort of odd? <Players in good state, excitement to be shown. Achieving win-win through the event. Discussion forum now open.> It almost seems like an awkward English translation from another language... :-\ |
 |
Dec-12-08
 | | chessmoron: <YouRang> That's China for you. I'm sure this is a 'direct translation' from Chinese to English. In doing that, it will seem odd. |

 | | JointheArmy: <chessgames.com> Do kibitzers really solve these puzzles or do the majority just get lucky? I consider myself a hardcore chess fan -- rightly so -- but some of the knowledge you need to have is ridiculous (in a good way) for these clues. |

 | | MostlyAverageJoe: Hey, CG, this was clue #5:
<
Black: Check.
White: Check.
Black: Check.
White: Checkmate.
>
So, here's a slightly different clue for you:
White: Check.
Black: Check.
White: Check.
Black: Checkmate.
MAJ, curious how long will it take you to find it in your database :-) |

 | | chessgames.com: <YouRang> That text was taken directly from the official site. Translations between Chinese and English often sound very humorous, due to the extreme differences between the languages, the syntax, and the culture itself. We hope nobody accuses us of being xenophobic again; we are just being playful. We're all big fans of the site http://www.engrish.com/ around here. <JointheArmy: <chessgames.com> Do kibitzers really solve these puzzles or do the majority just get lucky?> We don't really know any more than you do. We really would like to know how smitten solved the Monty Python clue so fast. (3358'08"N 8816'07"W -> Splunge, Missipissipi -> Monty Python -> Wicker vs Gilliam, 1975). We honestly expected that one to remain there for at least a day or two. But one thing we do know: nobody is cheating by employing web spiders. We've got our eyes open for that kind of thing. MostlyAverageJoe's discovery of the "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" clue (leading to P Castets vs G Andruet, 1991, a game with 15 consecutive capture) was another amazing coup. We can't say for sure, but we strongly suspect that he found the game in a similar way that we made the puzzle: by writing software that analyzes gigantic text files of PGN games. If that's the case, it's very impressive, but also fair game. Not wanting this to turn into a computer programming contest, we tried to limit the number of special prizes associated with clues that can be discovered by writing software. <MostlyAverageJoe> That game would be Mandolfo vs Kolisch, 1859. We discovered it while writing clue #5. <Also> In the time it took me to compose this kibitz, a clue was released, and also solved. We didn't think that very many people would know what a "Bongo Antelope" is; but we suppose it would be different if you live in the parts of the world where they roam free. It goes to show, what is an impossible puzzle for one person might be very simple for somebody else. |

 | | MostlyAverageJoe: < we strongly suspect that he found the game in a similar way that we made the puzzle: by writing software that analyzes gigantic text files of PGN games> You bet I did, with a highly customizable pattern matching. Too bad that the clues #5 and #6 happened when I was still at work. I see that you've just updated your zipfile directory yesterday. That's very kind, I was worried about clues leading to the recently added games :-) XOOXOOOX
