I live in <RSwitzerlandR>. I've been playing chess since I was eight with some breaks in between. At present I am 36.

I was in <QNew OrleansK> a couple of years ago and visited Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1 without knowing that Paul Morphy was buried there. I would have loved to visit his grave and pay homage to him.

  cu8sfan: And the ballots are in - not from New Hampshire but New York. Goose Gossage gets into the Hall of Fame. He's best known of course for being a former Cub. (-;

Here's something about the HoF: What is it with the veteran's committee? I mean, it did make sense back when many deserving old players were around, that didn't have a chance to be regularly elected. But nowadays, if you didn't get in ten years in a row, heck, maybe you just weren't good enough.

I did not want to hope for a blunder from you, which you would unlikely make ;-)

cu8sfan: Checking the Cubs roster for the first time since last October. Maybe I should follow offseason transactions after all, so my reaction wouldn't be "Who are these guys". (-:

The Cubs have their first home opener in a gazillion years. Is there still snow on the field? Go Cubs!

YouRang: It looks like your Cubs are getting fat by chewing on my Dodgers.

The Dodgers are reverting to their tradition of having decent pitching, but punchless hitting. Today they lost to the Cubs 2-1 in 10 innings.

It seems like they've scored something like 5 runs in the last 5 games. :-p

YouRang: My mistake: The Dodgers scored <7> runs in their last 5 games. I forgot that they 'exploded' for 4 runs against St. Louis last Sunday.

But in the other 4 games, it's been 1, 0, 1 and 1.

cu8sfan: <YouRang> Sixth straight for the Cubs now, the best record in the Majors. I repeat my question of MAR-31: Who are these guys? (-: Maybe there's a rule in baseball saying the Cubs can only play well in years ending in 08.

YouRang: Wouldn't that be a amazing if the Cubs win the World Series on the 100th anniversary of their last win?! :-)

Another notable 1908 event: A large meteoroid or comet blasted a spot in central Siberia, torching and leveling trees for over 2000 square kilometers (on June 30, 1908). This is known as the "Tunguska Event".

Hopefully, the Cubs don't win in years where we get smacked by a meteoroid!

PS - The Tunguska story was brought to my attention by an article I read in a recent issue of Scientific American. There had always been some controversy about what exactly hit us since the object was never found (and researchers couldn't examine the area until about 20 years later). Recently, some Italian researchers believe they have figured out that the object lies at the bottom of a strange funnel-shaped lake (Lake Cheko) -- and in fact that this lake was created by the impact. Interesting story. :-)

cu8sfan: We haven't gotten past the Cubs' June Swoon yet so don't hold your breath just yet. It is amazing though to see them with the best record in baseball, piling up one winning streak after the other.

Best team overall: Cubs. Best AL team: Tampa Bay. This is something you only get to see in the movies... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096874/

Tunguska: I first heard about it watching the X-Files. Let's hope this one misses better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_...

YouRang: Well, no sign of swooning yet. They're 3-0 so far in June.

And that's just the tail end of a nine game winning streak.

YouRang: Okay, the Cubs lost last night ending their streak at 9 games. But don't worry, it's unlikely to be the start of a "swoon".

They're playing the Dodgers next. ;-)

Jun-06-08  Rod Serling: The Cubs won a nail biter last night vs The Dodgers 5-4! Go Cubs!! Cu8sFan I noticed you live in Switzerland how is that you are a Cubs fan? Did you relocate to Switzerland from The U.S. or do you just like The Cubs? R. Serling

cu8sfan: <Rod Serling> I am Swiss. I didn't have any baggage and could have picked any team and been happy with it. As I had friends in Chicago and it was 1989 I figured the Cubs would be a good team to pick. (-:

At this moment the Swiss soccer team has just gotten onto the field in Basel before the Euro 2008 which takes place in Switzerland. Too bad I wasn't able to get any tickets. It was impossible to get any. )-: I would've loved to go to Italy-France in my home town of Zurich.
