You have to bring some funk to get some. You can't just walk in a place and expect to get some funk. If you ain't bring no funk, then you can't get no funk..Another thing is, you can't fake the funk or your nose will grow. (Bootsy Collins)

hms123: <Boomie> I think they were left out because they hadn't beaten anyone in the top 50. The PAC-10 was seen as incredibly weak this year.

hms123: <Mariano> You need to go further in your line.

Mar-14-12  crawfb5: The annotation I have gives 68...Kh4 instead, but I'm not sure I see how White can make progress against 68...g5+. All Black needs to do is eliminate that last white pawn.

The win against 66...g5? is very nice and well worth playing out if you don't see it on your own.

hms123: <Mariano> You must have posted while I was composing my post. Obviously, you did go further in your line.

<crawfb5> The line played in the game is a nice one.

There is a lively debate going on over at Yifan Hou vs F Caruana, 2012. During the game, the computer pundits claimed Hou missed a win. However did she? Perhaps some of your peeps should join the fray. Youze guys seem to revel in these bizarre endgames.

Some items of interest.

1. Iona in the MAAC lost to Fairfield (?) in the conference tournament and yet got invited to the dance.

2. California finished 2nd in the Pac 10 and didn't win the tourney yet was invited.

3. No Pac 10 regular season champion in history has ever been snubbed until this year.

hms123: <Boomie> I have to confess that I haven't followed west coast b'ball much this year. The games are usually on past my bedtime. Most of the news around here is, of course, about the SEC.

At least for the moment, Vandy is getting a lot of press. I hope they can win a game or two. I heard Dick Vitale (I generally can't stand him) say that he thought Vandy had a chance against Syracuse even with Melo playing--a good match-up for Vandy.

Mar-14-12  Boomie: The past few years, the Zags of Gonzaga have captured the most national attention. In a way, this is a sad testament to West coast ball. But also Gonzaga has been consistently successful and has one of the best coaches in the country.

Gone are the glory days of UCLA. But where do you get a John Wooden? Arizona has slipped since Lute Olsen retired.

I'm not sure why the West coast schools haven't landed talent. If you can't recruit to a place like Santa Barbara, you've got to be incompetent, I guess.

hms123: <Boomie> The SEC pays its coaches and players much better than anyone else.

John Calipari: <He arrives with the most lucrative contract in the college game an eight-year deal totaling $31.65 million after nine seasons at Memphis, which he guided to the verge of a national crown against Kansas last April.>

Mar-14-12  benjinathan: <Boomie> I have now composed two posts in reponse to yours and twice deleted. Here I try again.

You are right. Cal should never have got in over the Huskies. Cal lost by 39! to Missouri and got blown out by unlv as well and otherwise have nothing to suggest they are any good. Iona is also bad. They have played two name teams all year (purdue and maryland) and lost to purdue by one and beat the terps. But maryland did not get in either.

However, Iona has two good players and that may have hed an impact.

In the end though, I think the committee is sending the Pac 12 a message to get their act in gear. It has been a bad conference for 2 years in a row.

The selection committee did not give Washington any chance. Jeff Hathaway of the committe named the last six out as: Oral Roberts, Miami, Nevada, Drexel, Mississippi State, and Seton Hall.

Here is the espn take on the huskies (pre pac 12 tourny):

Washington [21-10 (14-4), RPI: 70, SOS: 94] It's official: Washington fans have absolutely no right to complain about the Huskies' "lack of respect" in regard to their at-large NCAA tournament chances. When you have this resume -- when your best nonconference win is UC Santa Barbara and your best league win (and the only top-70 victory) is at home against Oregon -- you simply cannot afford to end the Pac-12 tournament the way the Huskies ended theirs. Thursday's second-round loss to Oregon State may well spell "NIT" for the Huskies. They have the regular-season conference title going for them and ... that's pretty much it. They're 0-5 against the RPI top 50, 4-8 against the top 100, 6-8 away from their own building, with an RPI near 70. Nothing about this resume screams NCAA tournament team. They'll stay on the page for now, but it really isn't looking good. Considering all the NBA talent on this roster, the current state of affairs has to be considered a massive disappointment.

As a lifelong Huskies fan (from just across the water) I am disapointed, but I also know for a fact that they are not the best team in the country. I am not sure a first round loss would have felt any better.

WannaBe: I don't know what you guys are talking about, I have W. Kentucky facing Loyola (MD) in the final on April 1st, in New Orleans. =))
Mar-14-12  Boomie: <Considering all the NBA talent on this roster, the current state of affairs has to be considered a massive disappointment.>

The rest of the report seemed fay dinkum but this line is a bit harsh. 20 wins and a Pac 12 championship a disappointment? Piffle I say.

This is a very young team that loses discipline at times. The Freshman Wroten was 1st team Pac 12. I'm sure Coach Romar will eventually plug the leaks. They could win 24 next year.

Premium Chessgames Member
Jim Bartle: Coach Romar! I'm a lifelong Stanford fan, but find it hard to root against Washington and Lorenzo Romar. He was a valuable guard for the Warriors for several years, a very popular.
Mar-14-12  crawfb5: This might qualify as an "invisible" move.

Black to move.

Mar-15-12  benjinathan: Cal scored 13 points in the first half last night in losing to South Florida.

I think the committee was right.

hms123: <benjinathan> It sounds like the Cttee should have left out all the PAC-12 teams.

  hms123: <crawfb5>

I thought about Ne8 first, but that didn't get me anywhere. There's no choice but to ♗lock the g-file to stop the mate. After that it gets complicated, but Black is winning.

Mar-15-12  benjinathan: 2 1/2 hours til tip up. I was watching the early games at lunch. Glad that Vandy isn't playing Murray State.

hms123: <benjinathan> I am headed home right now to get ready to watch.
Mar-15-12  benjinathan: As a result of my day job, I can only make the second half I fear. Hopefully it will be well in hand by then.
Premium Chessgames Member
hms123: <benjinathan> It was closer than I liked near the end, but the better team prevailed.
Mar-15-12  benjinathan: Yes, a win is a win, but that was a bit ugly. Your guys had one good stretch, but apart from that it was close. The way they handled the full court press is concerning. I think they beat Wisconsin and Syracuse will be a thriller. If I am the Orange I press the whole game and see what Tinsley can do.
Premium Chessgames Member
Fusilli: I'm annoyed. The weather forecast for Friday and Saturday is pitiful, and it's just when we're having our admitted applicants (and a few wait-listed) visit us. Their perception of Nashville will be biased for the worse, damn it!
Mar-15-12  crawfb5: <I thought about Ne8 first, but that didn't get me anywhere. There's no choice but to block the g-file to stop the mate. After that it gets complicated, but Black is winning.>

Not so complicated, I think. Black has two Knights for Rook and pawn. After 1...Bg3! 2. fxg3 Qxc3, Black has won the exchange, leaving him a Knight up and White has no time to reopen the g-file because of the weakness of the Bishop on f3. Black will pick up the e-pawn and White is toast, which is how the game concluded.
