Just watched Polanski's "The Ghost Writer", I liked it. Poor sod, he's <banned> over there, isn't he.

On rare occasions, a perfect new song comes by. Dive into the calm waters of Radiohead (the best band in the world?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hY-p... Don't know if it's your cup of tea. Anyway, set to 1080p for best audio quality.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Niels> always sorry to see the Center closed- however it's your call obviously and working on music sounds auspicious- you mean composing/editing as opposed to just listening, eh?

As usual- <Ohio> has hit the nail on the head and many are upset at the moment, who can blame them.

Please don't let the Nukluz dissuade you from using my forum as a "posting home" with unlimited prviliges.

LOL if you happen to remember my password, you could *really* have unlimited priviliges, such as deleting posts and posting under my user account. LOLOL. Sorry Niels but that was a fun episode for me. To this day, me you and Woody have made "posts" where nobody knows for sure who actually did the posting.

At any rate-

If you want to see the most scathing parody of the "situation" <Ohio> spoke of, head over to <Switching Owls for Thugs> house to see his version of the "Terms and Conditions" for our beloved, yet benighted, website.

Love to you and Lars-

Lots and lots.

I'm sorry to see your forum closed also- feel free to hang out here any time you want. You can have carte blanche- including rants and such.

Thanks-

There's a great film starring Robert Redford who has had enough of the civil war & goes up into the mountains to become a mountain man. Excellent film! It's called Jeremiah Johnson.

  ChessBookForum: Here are a few Chess History suggestions from my library:

1. Al Horowitz <From Morphy to Fischer - a History of the World Chess Championship>

http://www.amazon.com/Morphy-Fische...?

s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1298265777&sr=1-15

This volume includes behind the scenes historical details about how every world championship

match was arranged- and played. Quite a shocking story in many respects.

######################

2. Gligoric and Wade <The World Chess Championship>

http://www.amazon.com/World-Chess-C...?

s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1298267472&sr=1-6

Covers the years from 1948 to 1969- really in depth history of the personalities of the

players, and how those personalities translated over the board in unique "chess styles." This

book is a must have IMO.

#########################

3. Kotov and Yudovich <The Soviet School of Chess>

http://www.amazon.com/Soviet-School...?

ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1298267716&sr=1-1

This is an invaluable document, detailing the history of the "Soviet Chess School," how it

worked, and what impact it had on the evolution of style in chess.

#############################

4. Mikhail Tal <Tal-Botvinnik 1960>

http://www.amazon.com/Tal-Botvinnik...?

ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1298267778&sr=1-1

Fascinating first hand account by Mikhail Tal about how he and his trainer Alexander Koblents

analyzed the games, style, and especially opening repertoire of Botvinnik in order to beat him.

#############################

5. Nikolai Krogius <Psychology in Chess>

http://www.amazon.com/Psychology-Ch...?

s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1298267921&sr=1-1

The first chapter of this book provides an intriguing theory about how the personalities of

various champions influenced their over the board style.

###########################

6. Max Euwe <Meet the Masters>

http://www.amazon.com/Meet-Masters-...?

ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1298268018&sr=1-1

Invaluable insight into the personality and chess styles of Alekhine, Capablanca, Flohr,

Botvinnik, Reshevsky, Fine, Keres, and Euwe.

  achieve: <Jess> You're right - I really didn't have to close the Euwe Center, did I? I just now activated it again. Will probably leave a short note there. Also to allow people to leave me a "note" there...

You were also right on the musical front; I'm arranging and editing songs, transcribing too, etc., aided by a program called <Notation Composer>, which allows me to make real pro looking sheets of music with staffs, clefs, keys, the whole yard.

Thanks for sharing your love and right back at ya. I'm online quite a lot, but 95% goes to music, whilst previously 95% went to CG, hehe, but really, what I'm managing to do right now with ther music is a childhood dream come true, as it were. Is!

heh

  achieve: PS- forgot to acknowledge, but hello to <rogge> and both his links - The World at War, and Radiohead - are exquisite, very interesting.

And <Jess>, indeed when you are practicing hard, and sometimes just "fooling around" on the piano, you stumble on, or look for, extensions of chords, different positions- more closed or spread out- and some of these "discoveries" work so wonderfully well, really colouring the harmonies, that one just *has* to write them down. If you don't, there's a good chance it will evaporate over time, while the preservation of ideas and experiments are the very building blocks for developing further advanced harmonies and structures, and as you said, even tunes/songs/compositions, which do come with surprising regularity, if you just let your ears do their work, and hear outside the well known boxes and conditioning.

Feel free to delete this btw, as i see the CBF post there with valuable tips.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Dr. Music>

heh- if you can find my password- bound to be in an old email- you could delete EVERY SINGLE POST in this forum....

Seriously though I suspected you were on to creative action when you mentioned you were occupied with music.

How is the state of your studio equipment? Last we spoke about this, some time ago, you were arranging some very complicated high-end electro-computer mixing set ups...

Feb-21-11
Premium Chessgames Member
  achieve: <Jess Muse> Well- I like to play it by ear, ha! - but uncanny you mention it, as yesterday I informed with a friend who has a midi electronic keyboard connected to his computer to his experiences. You can do musical handstands and flip flops with that software.

It does make the writing of lead sheets incredibly easy, quick, accurate and requires a minimum of effort.

Flipside is that I <like> the <effort>, in that the labour process induces more learning and making connections, immerse in the chord structures, invest more time. It's once again the balancing of the coin that is the trick, but certainly the advantages of such equipment is undisputed.

  Travis Bickle: Hi Jess, while were on the western movie theme there's a magnificent film called 'Little Big Man' starring Dustin Hoffman. The movie is a satirical re-telling about the old west by 'Jack Crabb', (Hoffman), to a curious historian. Hoffman portrays this story both as a young man and as an ancient 121 year old! A Tour De Force performance by Dustin Hoffman!!

33 Qb3-c2??

With 33 Qb3-c2?? White (Bluvshtein) has committed a losing blunder. What is the problem with this move? Well, let's look at all of the <THREATENED SQUARES>:

1) the Black d2-queen threatens the White c2-queen, ... QxQ; the White c3-rook meets this threat by <PROTECTING> the White c2-queen

2) the Black d2-queen threatens the White h2-king, ... QxK; the White g2-pawn meets this threat by <INTERPOSING> the White h2-king

Well, if the White c3-rook <PROTECTS> the White c2-queen, and the White g2-pawn <INTERPOSES> the White h2-king, who <DEFENDS> the f3-square?

Nobody.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Caissa>, on the other hand, may well care who the world chess champion is.

However- I'm not an expert on either theology or chess, sad to say.
